Frequent knee pain effects approximately 25% of adults, but what causes this?
It’s important to say there are many causes of knee pain and not all of them are appropriate for Physiotherapy, if in doubt always speak to a medical professional. That said, these are some of the most common causes of knee pain I see in clinic…

Meniscus problems
The meniscus is a pad of cartilage in the knee that acts as a shock absorber. Some knee pain can stem from irritation or small tears to the meniscus, it is sometimes accompanied by the knee locking, clicking, or giving way.

Ligament problems
There are 4 main ligaments in the knee, one on each side and two in the middle. These ligaments can be irritated or strained, often (but not always) after sporting injuries.

Bursitis
The body has many bursas, small fluid filled sacks that act as cushions. They reduce friction and protect joints and bones. Sometimes these can become irritated and inflamed, often swelling up. There are a number of bursas in the knee that can cause knee pain, particularly when kneeling or squatting.

Fat pad problems
The fat pad sits behind the kneecap, acting as a shock absorber. Sometimes this fat pad can become irritated as it is one of the most sensitive parts of the knee. This usually causes pain at the front of the knee, sometimes around or either side of the kneecap.

67% of people will experience shoulder pain in their lifetime, but what causes it?
It’s important to say that there are many causes of shoulder pain and sometimes Physio is not always the right choice. However, these are some of the most common causes I see in clinic…
Rotator cuff pain: There are four rotator cuff muscles, which help move and stabilize the shoulder as you raise and rotate your arm. Each of these can be a source of shoulder pain, this can be related to prolonged working postures, sports, or general overuse/weakness.
Frozen Shoulder: Frustratingly, this condition sometimes develops randomly. Typically, the shoulder loses its natural movement and becomes stiff. It is often accompanied by pain around the whole shoulder.
Biomechanics: The shoulder complex is made up of the upper arm (humerus), collar bone (clavicle) and the shoulder blade (scapula). These all need to move together to produce normal movement, if one isn’t moving quite right due to a dysfunctional/injured muscle, ligament, tendon or joint, this can cause shoulder pain.

If it all sounds complex, rest assured at Total Physiotherapy our Physiotherapists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat all these problems, and many more causes of shoulder pain! Get in contact today for a no obligation- free 15-minute Physio consultation and see how we can help you.
