What a brilliant first day at !

It was fantastic to hear from a wide range of inspiring speakers, including several representatives from our Trust who are helping to lead the conversation on innovation and transformation in healthcare.

Some of our highlights included:

💡Mark Cubbon, our Chief Executive, shared our experience of how AI is being embedded into clinical and back-office workflows to unlock capacity and improve outcomes.

💡Sabiha Kausar, Paediatric Haematology Consultant at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, contributed to a live podcast on emerging curative treatments for sickle cell disease and the challenge of ensuring that scientific breakthroughs translate into fair, timely and trusted access for patients.

💡Professor David Walliker, our Chief Digital and Information Officer, and Dr Henry Morriss, our Director of Clinical Informatics, shared how we are using AI apps and agents to support patient engagement, relieve administrative burden and improve process and workflow automation.

💡Patrick McGee, our Head of Strategic Projects, chaired a panel on how expanding diagnostic access can improve service resilience and enable more consistent care across regions, and enable more proactive, preventative approaches.

💡Vanessa Gardener, our Chief Delivery Officer, shared practical experiences of delivering meaningful, sustainable progress on 'shifting left' as a route to improved urgent and emergency care performance, better outcomes, and a financially sustainable future.

It’s been great to play a part in a day of collaboration, discussion and forward-thinking - we’re looking forward to day two.

Liverpool Women’s has introduced a new specialist procedure to help reduce the risk of late miscarriage and premature birth.

The keyhole surgery, called LAP TAC, places a stitch high around the cervix to help keep it closed during pregnancy. It’s usually done before pregnancy or in the early stages.

This treatment was previously only available in Manchester, but is now offered locally at Liverpool Women’s, meaning patients can access expert care closer to home.

The team completed their first three procedures successfully, with support from Kenneth Ma, Consultant Gynaecologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Marwa Fakhreldin, Consultant in Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine, said: “This is an important milestone for women across our region, patients can now receive highly specialised care closer to home, supported by our clinical team.”

Health and care staff work hard to care for us. Racism should never be part of their job.

Racist abuse towards health and care staff is on the rise across the UK. Colleagues looking after patients are being insulted, threatened, and abused - in hospitals, care homes, GP practices, and during home visits.

In Greater Manchester, we are taking a stand. We all have a role to play in supporting staff and keeping care safe for everyone.

Thank you for helping us raise £1.1m for our Manchester MediCinema Appeal!
This means Manchester’s very first in-hospital, fully accessible cinema will now become a reality for patients in our hospitals.

We’re so grateful to every single person, business, school and community group who helped us get to this point.

Whether you made a donation, took part in an event, completed a sponsored challenge, or simply spread the word - it’s your support that will soon bring moments of comfort, escapism and normality to thousands of our patients and families.

Our new MediCinema will open to patients this summer and we can’t wait to share it with you!

We're joining NHS Blood and Transplant in urging football fans to support England on and off the pitch this World Cup, by registering your organ donation decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register in the break between matches ⚽

In England, 1,365 people have died waiting for an organ since the whistle was blown to mark the end of the last World Cup in December 2022, and the waiting list is at its highest ever level. Yet, England sits bottom of the league when it comes to organ donation, sitting below Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the proportion of the population registered to donate their organs upon their death.

Martyn, a former semi-professional footballer from Wigan, who played for Manchester United’s academy as a teen, had a heart transplant at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2024, after suddenly falling critically ill. He now plays for the England transplant football team.

Martyn joins the call to get you to spend just two minutes to confirm your decision, "Donation saved my life, it saved the life of my football teammates and it saves the life of so many people every year. Please, think about what your donation decision would be and then confirm it – you’d be doing something truly lifesaving." 🫀🩵
