I know from experience that it’s scary when you feel so lost, you forget who you really are. ❤️
When I was diagnosed with ADHD, the question ‘Who am I?’ suddenly seemed to scream at me.
I was reminded this week of how it felt a few years ago, to doubt myself and question my whole identity.
It was frightening. I’ve been masking all these years? Am I a fake person? How could I not realise that I don’t even know who I am?
I wondered whether I’d ever feel content with myself. Whether the exhausting, incessant self-doubt would ever stop.
I’d subconsciously felt that way for a long time. At least now I was aware of it, I could start to make change.
I could finally start treating myself like someone who deserved to be known for the real me.
I took it one step at a time, and kept meeting the fear.
Because self-discovery is a process; embodying your true self can’t happen just by changing how you think.
It comes from moving through your deeper emotions, in your body.
It keeps you disconnected from yourself when you repeatedly suppress how you feel.
For me, it also felt so empowering (as a historically hyper-independent person - another coping mechanism), to realise I didn’t have to do it alone.
In fact, I couldn’t possibly; I’d already tried that for so long. I could ask for the help I needed, phew!
(I’m not saying that didn’t also take several attempts of trying to reach out and chickening out, either.)
You’re never alone. So many people understand what you go through, when you experience the despair of self-doubt and feeling utterly lost.
It’s so powerful to start with grounding yourself in your body, your breath, your physical sensations and underlying emotions.
Taking loving, radical responsibility for your human experience and the parts you do have control over.
You start to deeply trust your ability to stay with yourself, when you can feel challenging emotions without being overwhelmed.
It’s such a relief when you realise you were there all along.
When you’re no longer abandoning yourself, but choosing to love all the parts of you.
