But if you're hoping a new nose will fix your confidence, or a tummy tuck will repair a difficult chapter we need to have an honest conversation first. The patients who are happiest after surgery are those who already had a reasonable relationship with themselves. Emotional readiness isn't a soft topic it's clinical.

Fly home. Then what? This is the question most patients only think to ask after something goes wrong.

One of the most common situations I encounter: a patient returns from surgery abroad, something isn't right, and they assume a UK surgeon will simply step in. In many cases, that isn't how it works. A surgeon who wasn't involved in your planning doesn't have your imaging, your op notes, or your pre-operative baseline. Before you travel, ask yourself: who will manage my care when I land back home? Have that answer in writing before you go.

When your family says no to your surgery it's almost always love talking, not logic.

I hear this constantly. A patient comes in confident, ready, well-researched and then tells me their partner or parent is dead against it. In most cases, the fear behind that resistance is genuine concern dressed up as disapproval. The answer isn't an argument. It's a calm, evidence-based conversation.

Share accurate information. Invite them to ask questions.
