Can Swimming Help Improve Your Posture?
As a physiotherapist, I’m often asked whether swimming is good for posture.
The answer is yes—as part of a well-rounded exercise programme.
Poor posture is rarely caused by one thing alone. It often reflects a combination of prolonged sitting, reduced movement, muscle weakness, stiffness, and everyday habits.
Swimming can help because it:
✅ Strengthens the core, back and shoulder muscles
✅ Improves mobility and flexibility
✅ Builds endurance with minimal stress on the joints
✅ Encourages smooth, controlled movement
To get the best results:
• Focus on good swimming technique.
• Strengthen your upper back and core.
• Stretch tight chest and hip muscles.
• Break up long periods of sitting with regular movement.
• If you’re in pain, seek an individual assessment rather than relying on one exercise alone.
Current NICE guidance supports staying active and using exercise as part of managing many musculoskeletal conditions. Swimming is an excellent low-impact option, but the best programme is always one that’s tailored to your individual needs.
If you’re struggling with neck pain, back pain, or postural discomfort, I’d be happy to help.
