How many of you are in a situation where your horses can't have grass due to risk of laminitis?
Last year was a bad year for us. My daughter was revising for her GCSE's and her pony didn't get as much exercise as she would do normally. This unfortunately led to her becoming overweight and laminitis kicked in. We were heartbroken π.
With months of care and rehab my daughter has managed to reduce her pony's weight by over 70kgs (super slimmer of the yearπ). Laminitis is no longer an issue but we are very mindful of how we care for her.
Enrichment is important and anything we can do to reduce boredom.
At this time of year she cannot go out in the field so she has access to 2 stables and a yard 24/7. This helps with movement rather than being stuck in a stable all day and night. In order to keep her happy we regularly bring her friend into the yard for company so they can groom and eat together. We also allow her a hay ball and treat ball (low sugar treats or a bit of balancer) which again encourages movement and eating in a more natural position. She also has haynets in both stables so the choice is hers.
How does everyone else cope with restrictions due to diet etc.
