How to be a good plastic surgery patient (part 4): What happens after a consultation?

If your consultation has gone well and you feel positive about what was discussed, the next step is setting a realistic timetable.

This is a decision that should not be rushed. Trying to squeeze surgery and recovery into a window where there is not really time to do it properly is asking for trouble. It always goes better when patients wait for a moment where they can properly relax, properly recover, and keep all the risks as low as possible.

There is a mandatory 14-day cooling-off period after a consultation, and it exists for a good reason. Even when a consultation has gone very well, there can be a flush of enthusiasm that makes people want to move quickly. Taking time to reflect, talk it through, and plan calmly is always the better approach.

Once you are ready, you book a date and start preparing your life, your work, and your family around it. But there is no pressure to rush that decision.

How to be a good plastic surgery patient (part 2): How do I choose a surgeon?

You have decided you want to explore surgery. Now you need to find someone you trust to carry it out.

Start locally. Look at what clinics and surgeons are working within a reasonable distance. There is a practical advantage to being nearby, particularly during recovery and follow-up appointments.

Then look deeper. Visit their websites. Get a sense of the kind of practice they run. People work in very different ways and you need to feel comfortable in that environment. Look at their qualifications. Understand their background, their training, where they practice. You want evidence that this person is the real thing.

Reviews are a useful reference point. Any surgeon who has been working for a long time should have a strong record of satisfied patients. That is really the minimum you should expect.

But the most important thing is harder to measure. It is the feeling you get. A good gut feeling is probably the single most important part of your research. You need to feel chemistry with your surgeon. You need to feel listened to, understood, and confident that they genuinely care about your outcome.

Social media and video content can give you a sense of someone before you meet them. But the real test comes in the consultation room.

Most people who consider cosmetic surgery are not chasing perfection. They are dealing with a mismatch between how they feel on the inside and what they see on the outside.
