When people think about diabetes, they usually picture the obvious things: checking blood sugar, taking medication, or making food choices. Those moments are only a small part of the story.
What often goes unnoticed is everything that happens before and around them. It's remembering to pack supplies before leaving the house, thinking ahead about where your next meal will come from, wondering if you'll have what you need if plans change, and making countless small decisions throughout the day that most people never have to think about.
That constant planning can be mentally exhausting, even if no one else sees it. It's one of the reasons diabetes is often described as an invisible illness. While the condition may not always be visible to others, the physical, emotional, and mental effort of managing it is very real.
Living with diabetes isn't just about managing your health. It's also about carrying an invisible mental load that many people don't realise exists.
If you live with diabetes, what part of your daily experience do you wish more people understood?
