We set off from Matlock Bath, and as ever, the day began with a climb. A steep one at that — but nothing out of the ordinary for this part of Derbyshire. Reaching Bonsall just in time for lunch felt perfectly timed. After a well‑earned break it was straight into the wonderfully eccentric heart of the day: the World Hen Racing ChampionshipbWhat followed was pure organised chaos — feathers flying, spectators cheering, hens occasionally cooperating, and everyone laughing. It was impossible not to get swept up in the fun. A real slice of local character and a brilliant change of pace in the middle of a walk. After the excitement, the route continued with great views to bring us back to the start.
Thanks for leading us today Julie.

We set off from the village green in Barlborough, where they beginning to set up for the summer fête — a cheerful backdrop to the start of our day. Under clear blue skies, warm sunshine and a cooling breeze, the group headed out towards Woodall, enjoying easy paths and wide views. From Woodall we continued around the Harthill reservoirs, where we paused for a relaxed coffee break. The return route to Barlborough took us through crop fields, where the paths had all but disappeared into the tall growth, adding a little adventure as we threaded our way back.
We passed Barlborough Hall, its grand façade looking striking in the sunshine. Once an independent school, it closed last year — a quiet reminder of how places change over time.
Back in Barlborough, and after lunch, the day took a different turn from our usual walks. We wandered around visiting the open gardens taking part in the National Garden Scheme, enjoying a mix of colour, creativity and well‑kept corners. We also called into the Methodist church to see the art exhibition, and St James’ church, where a charming flower and brick display rounded things off.
Thanks to Brian for today's outing.

It remained rather warm for this evening's walk around Clipstone and Intake Wood. We kept a steady pace, an amble more than a ramble, and plenty of hydration breaks.
Thanks to Stephen for leading this evening.
