Clinicians use the ABCDE list for this. Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolving. The last one carries the most weight, because a mole you have had for thirty years that has started changing matters more than one that has always looked slightly odd.
There is also the ugly duckling sign. If one mole looks noticeably different from all your others, it is worth a look even if it passes every other test. Areas people miss are the back, the scalp and the backs of the legs.
