The Soothing Season

The Soothing Season Nature-inspired art therapy supporting women to reconnect with themselves. Online group workshops & individual programmes. A quiet moment for you.

What is art therapy? Art therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses the relationship between the client, therapist, and art work to explore the client's feelings. Art therapy is a protected title, which means only trained and HCPC registered practitioners can call themselves art therapists or say they provide art therapy. How does it help? Art therapy is supported by a number of theories, and fo

r me attachment theory, neuroscience, and the self-soothing nature of art-making underlie my practice. Each person may find art therapy helps them in different ways, some of which may be:

- to feel more connected,
- to find out new things about themselves,
- to identify the causes of feelings,
- to connect with early memories,
- to express and process traumatic events

Making art in therapy can give life to feelings, and provide a safe environment to explore this. What do I provide? As a private practitioner I provide a variety of ways to engage with art therapy. I offer individual sessions with adults, young people and children, as well as working with parent and child to strengthen relationships, and group work. There is also some opportunity for creating outdoors. You will be able to use a variety of art materials including paints, pens, pastels, clay, collage, felt making and sewing. You may also decide to use found objects. You may decide there are times you do not want to make art. I work from Commondale, North York Moors, from the village hall. More information:

I always breathe easier next to the sea. Whether it's calmly lapping at my feet or the waves are rolling along the cliffs, the vast space of the ocean allows me to stop holding tightly to life and to breathe in the space.

I love slowing down with art. It helps me notice what's happening around me, as well as within me.

I'm taking time off this August to enjoy the simple pleasures of nature and art. I'll get back to any messages when I return in September.

Follow me here for more invitations to find space for yourself.

Each August I take a break. I know this is something I need, but at first I felt guilty about it, thinking it was luxurious, feeling like I had so much to do, worrying about what other people would think.

I happily slip into my time off now. I prepare for it, and let people know, and I know this is part of my life and I can only work if I take good care of myself.

So, you will see a few scheduled posts from me over August, but I will be taking some space from here to rest, reflect, and prepare. I hope you have some space for this too.

See you in September.

When I paused for just a minute next to the beautiful lake on my way home, I got this unexpected greeting from a swan.

Follow me here for more of the unexpected joys of slow moments with nature.

It was a really difficult time for me when I first found out that my home in Sheffield was to be compulsory purchased by the council.

At that point I really didn't want to move. The whole provess took 10 years, and I used that time to think about the life I really wanted.

I try not to wait for something so dramatic to happen in my life for me to check-in with myself to see if I still am on track to have the life I really want and to make those little, or big, adjustments.al9ng the way.
