World Pharmacists Day | Staff Spotlight

Anthony Nugent is a dedicated General Practice Clinical Pharmacists, who has worked in pharmacy for 19 years and has been part of NHS Ayrshire & Arran for almost five years.

Inspired by a childhood fascination with the knowledge and problem-solving skills of pharmacists, he went on to build a career he genuinely loves. Working across GP practices in South Ayrshire, his role involves supporting patients, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and helping to develop the next generation of pharmacy professionals. He is also passionate about advancing inclusive healthcare and is particularly proud of developing and delivering training on trans healthcare across NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

On Friday 18 September and Monday 21 September 2026, GP practices will be closed for the bank holiday.

Some community pharmacies will remain open and can provide advice on choosing and using medicines, as well as support for treating common, everyday ailments. NHS 24 also has pharmacists available to answer medicine‑ and pharmacy‑related questions by calling 111.

‼️Protected Learning time‼️

Carrick Medical Practice will be closed from 1pm on Tuesday 25th August 2026 to carry out staff training. During these times the Ayrshire Urgent Care Service will provide urgent care and support to patients of our practice while we are closed.

Should you need to call the Ayrshire Urgent Care Service the contact number is 01563 826930. This number will only be available during times when the practice is usually open. After 5:30 please contact 111.

GP Administrator

20 – 24 Hours a week


We are looking for a GP Administrator to join our friendly team at Carrick Medical Practice. We are looking for someone to work 20- 24 Hours a week.

This is a varied, rewarding and challenging role requiring excellent communication skills. The role will include dealing with patients over the telephone and face to face, processing prescriptions, booking and cancelling appointments and all other administration duties as required. Candidates should have a comfortable level of IT skills and display good organisational skills. Knowledge of EMIS and Docman clinical systems would be advantageous although not essential as training will be provided.

Hours of work will be between 8:00am and 6:00pm over 5 days. Flexibility is essential to cover annual leave,sickness and changes to working days/hours . Salary will be dependent on experience.

🚨 Our Emergency Departments (A&E) at University Hospital Ayr and University Hospital Crosshouse are extremely busy today. People who attend ED with non-urgent needs will face a long wait.

Some GP Practices will be closed from 1pm to 5.30pm on the 17th, 23rd and 25th of June to carry out staff training. During these times the Ayrshire Urgent Care Service will provide urgent care and support to patients of practices which are closed.

Patients or Community Pharmacies who require to contact a participating GP Practice urgently during the time they are closed for Protected Learning Time should call the Ayrshire Urgent Care Service on 01563 826930.
