💧 Sensory Saturdays 💧

This week's sensory activity is a Water Bead Scoop! 🌈

Water beads are a fantastic way to encourage sensory exploration while developing important skills through play.

Try filling a tray with water beads and provide cups, spoons or scoops for your child to:
🥄 Scoop and pour
🫙 Transfer between containers
🌈 Explore different colours and textures
🔍 Search for hidden toys or letters

This simple activity can help to:
🧠 Develop fine motor skills
✨ Encourage problem-solving and curiosity
💙 Support sensory processing
🤲 Improve hand-eye coordination
💬 Build language as you talk about colours, textures and sizes together

Top tip: Always supervise children during water bead play and ensure activities are age-appropriate, as water beads can be a choking hazard if swallowed.

Play doesn't need to be complicated—sometimes the simplest activities create the biggest learning opportunities! 💙

Have you tried water bead play before? We'd love to hear your favourite sensory activities in the comments!

❓FAQ: What should my child wear to their OT appointment?

We recommend:
👕 Comfortable clothes they can move around in. 👟 Trainers or shoes suitable for climbing and balancing.
💧 A water bottle if they'd like one.

Many of our assessments and therapy sessions involve movement, climbing, balance activities and sensory equipment, so comfy clothing helps children get the most from their session.

🎉 Therapy Thursday 🎉

This week's activity is Sensory Bin Discovery! 🌈👐

Sensory bins are a fun, hands-on way to encourage learning through play while supporting your child's development.

Whether you use rice, pasta, sand, lentils or water, sensory bins provide endless opportunities to explore, create and build important skills.

Here are a few simple ideas to try:
🥣 Rice or pasta with scoops and cups
🫘 Lentils or beans with hidden toys to find
💧 Water with sponges, cups and floating toys
🏖️ Sand or kinetic sand with moulds and figures
🔤 Coloured rice with letters, numbers or shapes

Sensory bins can help to:
💚 Support sensory processing
✋ Strengthen fine motor skills and hand coordination
🎯 Improve attention and concentration
🧠 Encourage creativity, problem-solving and imaginative play
😊 Promote calmness and self-regulation

Remember to supervise your child throughout the activity and choose materials that are appropriate for their age and stage of development.

✨ Sometimes the simplest activities create the biggest opportunities for learning.

❓ Why Wednesdays

Why does my child struggle to sit still and stay focused?

Many children aren't fidgeting because they're being disruptive or choosing not to pay attention.

For some, movement actually helps their brain stay alert, organised and ready to learn. Sitting still for long periods can be physically and mentally challenging, especially for children with sensory processing differences, ADHD or other developmental needs.

💡 Here are a few ways to help:
🏃 Build regular movement breaks into the day.
🪑 Try alternative seating or allow movement while learning.
🎯 Break tasks into smaller, manageable chunks.
👏 Praise effort and progress rather than expecting perfection.

Every child learns differently, and sometimes the best way to improve focus is to allow the movement their body needs.

Understanding the why behind a child's behaviour helps us respond with support instead of frustration.

💬 Does your child concentrate better after they've had a chance to move? We'd love to hear what works for you!

💡 Tip Tuesday 💡

This week's Occupational Therapy tip is all about heavy work activities. 💪

Heavy work activities provide deep pressure and muscle input that can help children feel calmer, more organised and ready to learn. They can be particularly helpful for children who seek movement or find it difficult to regulate their energy levels.

Here are a few easy ways to include heavy work in your child's day:
🎒 Carry a backpack (with a safe, appropriate weight)
📦 Push or pull heavier objects
👐 Wall pushes
🧺 Help with household chores like carrying laundry
🚜 Wheelbarrow walks

These activities can support attention, body awareness and emotional regulation—and they're easy to weave into everyday routines.

Remember, every child is different, so finding the activities that work best for them is key.

💚 Small strategies really do make a big difference.

What are your child's favourite heavy work activities? Share your ideas in the comments below! 👇

🧠 MYTH: "Autistic children don't want friends."

✅ FACT: Many autistic children want friendships just as much as anyone else.

The challenge is often knowing how to build, maintain or navigate social relationships—not a lack of interest in having them.

Every child deserves meaningful connections.

❤️ What's one way you've helped your child build friendships?

🦖 Sensory Saturdays 🦖

This week's sensory activity is a Dinosaur Sensory Bin!

Messy play is a fantastic way to encourage children to explore, imagine and learn through their senses.

Here's how to create your own:
🫧 Fill a tray with shaving foam, cloud dough or cooked spaghetti.
🦕 Add some toy dinosaurs.
🥄 Include cups, spoons or scoops for digging and pouring.
✨ Hide small objects for your child to discover.

This activity can help to:
🧠 Develop sensory processing
🤲 Strengthen fine motor skills
💬 Encourage language and storytelling
🎨 Spark creativity and imaginative play
😊 Build confidence through exploration

Remember, there's no right or wrong way to play! Let your child lead the activity and explore at their own pace.

Have you tried a dinosaur sensory bin before? We'd love to see your creations—share them in the comments below! 💙
