Whilst driving between yards yesterday, I caught a little of the Jeremy Vine show, and they were talking about dietary supplements. I wish I could remember the guys name, he had written a book after researching how supplements are made and how most of them are a money making con, the ones he tested did not contain much of, or even any of the herb or mineral they were promoting, some if them were not even produced in the country stated on the packaging!!!

The wellness sector is on fire at the moment. You only have to scroll through Instagram to be bombarded with advertisements making great claims for their supplement, wether it be high cortisol, menopause, joint pain, ageing skin, gut disorders, there are masses and masses of them!

And I have been sucked in by them too! Because who do you trust? It would appear that some of these companies research their own products and produce flawed papers!! Its an absolute minefield, and the companies are making millions out of us!

I can only imagine it is the same in the equine wellness sector. We are suckers for buying products that make great claims for our beloved horses. The shelves are full of gut balancers and joint supplements and products to improve hoof quality and cure itchy skin.

What if we went straight to the source, and cut out the fillers and packaging and headline claims? What if we just went back to the herb, which has been doctored and bastardised and chemically altered to make a supplement bearing the name of the actual herb? 🌿 🤷‍♀️

It is crazy out there, with so many companies trying to make money out of our love for horses, when what they actually need for good health is all around them.

Horses are herbivores. They eat green stuff. And brown stuff! Not chemicals and plastic and GI modified soya based nonsense!

Lets get back to basics. Go for a forage walk! Reseed sections of your field with wild flowers and diverse grasses. Offer dried herbs and fruits and seeds. Stuff horses actually want to eat!

Not sure about any of it? Need some help? Of course! That is what I am here for! I can help you work out which herbs, forage and seeds can help your horse for different ailments, at different times of the year.

Workshops, forage walks or one to one herbal consultations, take your pick, lets get more educated about what our horses really need to thrive, not what someone in a suit, in an air conditioned office thinks they can sell us because it boosts their profits! 😡

Also, if anyone heard the Jeremy Vine show yesterday, please let me know the name of the book!

I had some Mugwort on my stall on Saturday and no one knew what it was. So here is Mugwort!! Artemisia vulgaris. Grows everywhere, I found this in a car park!

Mugwort is great for digestive disorders, it stimulates digestion and can relieve gas and bloating.

It is a menstrual regulator, and was traditionally used as herbal medicine for female disorders, might be one to offer to your mare at all stages of her cycle.

It is an anxiolytic, so helps ease stress and anxiety.

It has anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties.

It is a great herb as part of your anti-worming strategy, especially for threadworms and roundworms.

Mugwort is best picked just before, or as it is flowering, around July.

My guys both had a chew on it this morning, but it is quite stick like at this time of year, and their interest soon turned to the ash, which is still green and tasty!

Half day workshop at Eastwell LE14

If you are interested in the magic of herbal medicine but haven’t yet taken the plunge, come along and have a look!

Self selection demonstrations with dried herbs, fresh forage and aromatherapy.

Discussing equine gut health, a subject very close to my heart. Most horses have some sort of gut issue, be it ulcers, hind gut dysbiosis or tricky digestion.

We explore the equine microbiome, responsible for immunity, and has a direct effect on every system of the body.

Our horses are sick! Cases of ulcers, laminitis, sweet itch, metabolic issues, obesity, asthma, anxiety and stress are increasing!

We can discuss how to move forwards, what to avoid, and how to best manage your horse’s issues using Natures Pharmacy.

Horses are herbivores, they are designed to eat this stuff!!!! Lets give their bodies what they need for good health!!!

Join us for a fun and educational morning.£40pp [email protected]

Dogs 🐶 ❤️ our best friends. Our shadows. Always wanting to please, loyal and eager. For the owner, the hardest part of a Canine Herbal Consultation, is having to ignore your best buddy!!

Let me explain…..

When I present nutritional herbs to a dog, the first thing that dog will do is check in with the owner…..is it ok for me to eat this, mum? And they will continue to check in throughout the session.

For the best results, we want the dog to choose the nutritional herbs that their bodies need, not what they think their owner approves of!

So the owner has to try to not make eye contact and not change their body language too much, so the dog is able to conduct the session for themselves. Once they understand that they are free to make choices for themselves, they thoroughly enjoy this new found freedom and liberty and select what they need!!

This lovely spaniel made very obvious choices. Once she had selected her medicinal herb, she would carry the bowl around the room in a victory dance!

And when she selected an essential oil, she would sit on my foot with her back resting on my leg, interacting with the aroma. Wonderful body language!

Most dogs come to me for help with stress and anxiety, which can create behavioural issues. And on that journey, I always explore gut health and the presence of pain and inflammation.

Do get in touch if you need some help with your best friend 🐾🐾🐾🐾
