The spectacular Giant Day Gecko from the island of Madagascar.

These large geckos live high up on tree trunks, and unlike most geckos are only active by day!

They have very good vision, always keeping an eye out for rivals, predators and food.

They feed mainly on large insects and even other lizards, plus love to lap nectar from flowers and sticky sweet sap from tree trunks.

So if you are ever lucky enough to be in the forests of Madagascar, look up, you may well be spied upon by one of these living jewels of the forest!

So why do we see shieidbugs on blackberries?

If you haven’t noticed them, take a closer look the next time you are out blackberry picking.

In fact the shieidbugs often earn their alternative name of STINKBUG when we accidentally encounter them on the blackberries, grabbing them on the fruit by mistake and resulting in their defensive, stinky fluid contaminating an otherwise lovely blackberry!

So why are they there?!

Well, Shield bugs sit on blackberries to feed on the plant juices and also BASK IN THE SUN!

Shieldbugs have a sharp, needle-like mouthpart known as a stylet. They use the stylet to pierce the fruit and drink the sweet sugar-rich fluid inside.

They love eating blackberries just as much as we do!

Also did you know that the shieldbugs breeding cycle is evolved to perfectly overlap with the peak fruiting season of the blackberries, allowing their ravenous babies to have plenty of calorific food to grow fat on.

But even more amazing is the shieidbugs use the blackberries to keep warm, SERIOUSLY!!

Yes it’s true. As the suns rays hit the sugar-rich black fruit, it gets warmer far quicker than the surrounding air and bramble leaves. The blackberry quickly becomes a natural radiator!

The cold blooded shieidbugs have clocked this, and will gather on the blackberries to enjoy their warmth, whilst having a quick sip of sugary drink at their leisure.

Sounds like being on vacation!

The spectacular Praying Mantis, and what a beast!

I found this rather large lady in Greece, they are certainly one of the smartest and most responsive of the insects to the world around them.

Did you know they can turn their heads almost 180° plus they are unusual among insects because they can swivel their heads from side to side, allowing them to look directly behind themselves.

Like humans they have excellent 3D vision — their large, forward-facing eyes can detect depth, helping them accurately judge the distance to prey before striking.

Their strike is incredibly fast — a mantis can sn**ch prey with its spiny forelegs in a fraction of a second, giving its victim very little chance to escape.

And of course love can be extremely tricky for a poor male mantis! In some species, the females may cannibalise the male during or after mating.

Remarkably, a decapitated male can sometimes continue mating because much of the behaviour is controlled by nerve centres in its abdomen.

What is it and what happened here?

Well I’ll tell you!

Let’s look at the evidence and work backwards to solve the crime.

This is the nest of a Caspian Turtle.

Several months ago a female turtle laid her eggs in the soil to incubate, and here they sat safely, the baby turtles gradually growing inside their shells in the sun warmed soil.

But then, toward the end of their incubation, days before they were due to hatch and emerge from the ground, disaster struck!

A predator found the nest! Likely a Stone Marten or Badger used their amazing sense of smell to find the nest below ground, and dug it up! They ate all the eggs, but left several damaged and uneaten.

Here they remain, drying in the Greek sunshine, revealing the now mummified tiny turtle skeletons inside, like tiny alien skeletons.
