A much-loved animal therapy session has been credited with improving mental health for patients hospitalised for weeks or even months at James Cook Hospital, thanks to fundraising from a local home care company.

Patients at the Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Centre at the site often require lengthy periods of treatment and rehabilitation. Some of them face limited mobility which prevents them from leaving the unit, leaving them feeling isolated and disconnected from everyday life.

But spinal patients have been able to make new four-legged friends from the comfort of the spinal injuries unit garden, thanks to generous funding from Caremark Redcar and Cleveland, via its dog-assisted therapy service.

The care provider has funded ten free dog therapy sessions for spinal injury patients at the unit, who have praised the friendly canine visitors for improving their mental health and having a positive impact on their care.

This includes regular visits from dogs like Kyro, who is accompanied by a trained handler/carer and a spinal staff member, and takes patients from the spinal injuries unit on walks around the hospital grounds before spending time playing and interacting with them in the unit’s garden.

Learn how to protect your eyes whilst watching the partial solar eclipse!

We probably shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t look directly at the sun. Looking directly at the sun without the right protection can cause permanent damage to your eyesight – so you need to take care. Remember, your normal sunglasses may look great, but they won't cut it.

It’s mafting out there today. We want you to make the most of the warm weather, but there are health risks to be cautious of when it gets too hot.

Please watch out for signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and those around you. And if you do experience these symptoms, drink plenty of fluids and keep to the shade to cool down. You should start to cool down and feel better within 30 minutes.

Symptoms to look out for:

• Tiredness

• Dizziness

• Headache

• Feeling sick or being sick

• Excessive sweating and skin becoming pale and clammy or getting a heat rash, but a change in skin colour can be harder to see on brown and black skin

• Cramps in the arms, legs and stomach

• Fast breathing or heartbeat

• A high temperature

• Being very thirsty

• Weakness
