Happy International Day of the Midwife!
Today, we’re celebrating the incredible people who bring new life into the world, starting with Roxy El-Dharrat one of our registered midwives.
From being born right here at James Cook Hospital to training and now working at James Cook, Roxy’s journey has come full circle.
After growing up in Saudi Arabia, she originally planned on neonatal nursing, but everything changed when she discovered midwifery.
She’s now been part of the profession for over six years and says, "I was always meant to be a midwife; I just didn’t know it until 6 ½ years ago."
For Roxy, the heart of the job is the families. She loves making an impact on life’s most special moments, knowing that while a family might not remember her name, they will always remember how she made them feel. It’s her way of leaving a "little imprint on the world" by helping create beautiful memories.
To anyone thinking of joining the profession, Roxy’s advice is simple: be dedicated, be resilient, and give your heart. She believes in treating every single patient exactly how you would want your own family to be treated, with kindness, every single day.
And for the new or expectant parents out there, Roxy’s has a little reminder:
“It’s so stressful being parents to a newborn - it’s crazy, but it’s so special.
“Trust your gut, try not to worry about worrying, and not having the answers is fine. That’s what we’re here for – to support and guide you and let you know that you’re doing amazing.
“Life is short and kids grow up quickly. They’re only little for a short while so cherish it.”
