Our self-guided trail for the 2026 North Pennines Stargazing Festival is ‘creatures of the night’.

Come along with your family and follow the trail through the woods around Bowlees Visitor Centre. As you take this exciting journey you will discover the creatures of the night and pick up clues.

Suitable for ages five and above. Available during opening hours (10am to 3pm) from Saturday 17 October to Sunday 1 November.

This event is part of the North Pennines Stargazing Festival running from 16 October to 1 November 2026 – www.NorthPenninesStarFest.org

For more than 20 years, Clare and Matt Kennedy-Smith (pictured) and their two daughters have marked every special occasion with a family walk along the Glendorgal Headland.

Isaac's Tea Trail the art tour. A buzzard soars ever higher on the thermals and disappears out of sight above Carrshield Moor. Far below the ruin of Allotment House clings to the edge of The Black Way.

Its a view painted by artist the late Paul Stangroom from the top of the West Allen visible between Coalcleugh and Allenheads. As much as anyone his paintings capture the disappearing farmsteads dotted about the North Pennines. A recent photo of the same place shows Allotment House has over the passage of time lost its roof.
