🌞🎉 WOW… WHAT A SUMMER FAYRE! 🎉🌞

What can we possibly say other than THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! 💚

Yesterday, Somer Valley House welcomed more than 200 people through our doors for what was officially our most successful Summer Fayre to date! 🥳

From our residents and their families to familiar friends from the local community and lots of wonderful new faces visiting us for the very first time, it was absolutely incredible to see our home and gardens bursting with laughter, sunshine and people of all ages enjoying themselves. And even the weather was on our side as the sun shone beautifully all afternoon! ☀️

But the most exciting news of all…

🥁🥁🥁 WE RAISED OVER £1,300 FOR THE DYSON CANCER CENTRE AT THE RUH AND DONATIONS ARE STILL COMING IN! 🥁🥁🥁

Every single penny raised from the day will be donated, and we simply cannot thank everyone enough for their generosity. 💚

Our 40-foot inflatable obstacle course was an enormous hit with children and adults alike… including a few suspiciously enthusiastic members of staff who insisted they were only climbing, bouncing and racing their way through it in the interests of “health and safety testing” before the children were let loose! 👀😂

Our raffle tables were practically groaning under the weight of so many fantastic prizes, while the adorable baby rabbits and guinea pigs melted hearts everywhere. 🐰 The beautiful alpaca, miniature donkey and Shetland pony were equally popular and certainly gained plenty of new admirers! 🦙🐴

Meanwhile, the BBQ was in full swing with Tania grilling up a storm, while Erica took charge of our fabulous Tiki Bar, serving cocktails, Pimm’s, iced tea, mojitos, fruit punch and plenty more besides. 🍹🌺 Of course, no visit to the Tiki Bar was complete without the obligatory garland and grass skirt as we take these things very seriously at Somer Valley House! 😂

🎤 Les sang his heart out and kept everyone entertained with some fantastic music, while Johnny G wowed children and adults alike with breathtaking magic and brilliant puppet fun. 🪄✨

And then there was Desmond the Dalek… 🤖

We finally discovered the perfect way to keep our Emma out of trouble ! We trapped her inside Desmond for 20 minutes and enjoyed the peace and quiet while it lasted! 😂😂 Unfortunately, she escaped, so normal service has now resumed!

From beginning to end, the afternoon was everything we could have hoped for and more.

To everyone who donated prizes, gave their time, helped behind the scenes, cooked, served, entertained, set up, cleared away, volunteered, donated money or simply came along and joined in the fun , you helped make the day incredibly special.

Most importantly, thank you to every single person who walked through our doors and supported us. 💚

Community is at the very heart of Somer Valley House, and days like yesterday remind us exactly what that means. Our home isn’t just a building , it’s a place where residents, families, friends, colleagues and our wider community can come together, make memories, laugh and enjoy life.

💚 £2,574 RAISED FOR TIME IS PRECIOUS! 💚

We had a very special visitor at Somer Valley House last week when the lovely Nicky Halford MBE from Time is Precious popped in to see us and present our brand-new, up-to-date fundraising certificate! 🥰

We are incredibly proud to have helped raise an amazing £2,574 for this wonderful local charity. 🎉

Time is Precious does such incredible work supporting local children and their families during their time in hospital, and knowing that our fundraising has helped contribute towards that work makes every raffle ticket sold, cake eaten, event attended and penny donated completely worthwhile. 💚

A huge THANK YOU to our residents, families, team members and wonderful local community who have supported our fundraising along the way , this total belongs to every single one of you. 🌟

Nicky, it was an absolute pleasure to see you again. We can’t wait to continue working with Time is Precious in the future and to keep watching the fabulous difference you make to children and families across our local community.

Vincent van Gogh might have painted some rather famous sunflowers… but we think he could have picked up a tip or two from our wonderfully creative residents! 🌻🎨💛

After all, who says you even need a paintbrush when you’ve got two perfectly good hands?! 🙌😂

Our residents had a fabulous afternoon creating their very own sunflower masterpieces, with plenty of colour, creativity, laughter and good conversation along the way. Gloves got covered… and we’re fairly certain there may have been almost as much paint on our residents as there was on the paper by the end! 😂🎨

It was wonderful to see everyone getting stuck in, putting their own individual stamp on their creations and, most importantly, having lots of fun while doing it.

Move over, Vincent… the Somer Valley House School of Art is officially in session! 🌻🎨👏

🚨🎪 STOP THE PRESS… OUR SUMMER FAYRE HAS JUST GOT EVEN BIGGER!!! 🎪🚨

I know what you’re thinking… HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?! 😂

As if our Summer Fayre wasn’t already bursting at the seams with:

🦙 Visiting alpacas from Twinnies
🐾 Twinnies fabulous petting zoo
🤖 The one and only Desmond the original Dalek from Dr Who
🎟️ A raffle table that is practically HEAVING with prizes
🛍️ Independent craft stalls
🎤 TWO different live entertainers, singer Les and magician and ballon modeller Johnny G
🍔 A delicious BBQ
🎉 And plenty more besides…

We may have just gone and added something HUGE.

And when we say huge… we mean 40 FEET HUGE! 😱😂

Weather permitting, our back garden will now be home to a 40-FOOT INFLATABLE MEGA OBSTACLE COURSE!!! 🏃‍♀️💨🏃‍♂️💨

Yes, you read that correctly!

This isn’t just for the children either , kids AND adults are welcome to have a go, so prepare yourselves for some serious family rivalry as you race each other through the obstacles to see who can claim ultimate bragging rights! 😂🏆

Parents versus children… grandparents versus grandchildren… colleagues versus colleagues… NO MERCY! 😂

Our Summer Fayre really is shaping up to be an absolutely fantastic afternoon for the whole community, and EVERYONE IS WELCOME! ❤️

🛍️ WHO DOESN’T LOVE A GOOD OLD MOOCH AROUND THE SHOPS?! 🛍️

Clothes, furniture, homeware… you name it, we mooched it! 😂

This week, some of our lovely residents hopped aboard the Miley Bus with Lifestyle team member Jeanette and headed off to Townsend Shopping Centre in Shepton Mallet for a spot of retail therapy.

There was plenty of browsing, a little bit of “Ooooh, that’s nice!”, perhaps the occasional “I definitely don’t need it… but I’m having it anyway!” and lots of fun looking around the various shops. 🛒🥰

And obviously, no respectable shopping trip could possibly end without carrying out some very important research into the surrounding cafés. ☕🍰 Someone has to make sure the coffee is hot and the cake is up to standard, after all!

Then came the all-important ice cream. 🍦☀️ But before anyone accuses us of overindulging, we would like to make it absolutely clear that it was VERY hot outside and the ice cream was therefore consumed strictly for medicinal purposes. Doctor’s orders… probably. 😂

Another fabulous trip out, full of laughter, friendship, treats and the simple pleasure of a good old-fashioned mooch. ❤️

At Somer Valley House, it’s not just about where we go , it’s about making everyday moments feel special and continuing to enjoy all the things our residents have always loved doing. 🥰

Now… when’s the next shopping trip?! 🚌🛍️🍦

🌟 MEET LILYANNA! 🌟

Lilyanna is one of the fabulous members of our bank care team here at Somer Valley House – the wonderful people who step in, roll up their sleeves and help us keep everything running smoothly, particularly during the busy holiday season. 💜

Our bank team play such an important role in supporting our permanent team and helping us maintain excellent staffing levels so that our residents continue to receive the time, attention and care they deserve.

But last week, Lilyanna swapped her usual care duties for something a little different when she stepped in to support our Lifestyle Team… and found herself taking centre stage for her very first Armchair Exercise Class! 🪑💪🎶

And what a fabulous job she did! 👏

There was movement, music, plenty of smiles and lots of encouragement as Lilyanna confidently put our residents through their paces – proving that being part of Team Somer Valley sometimes means being prepared to turn your hand to just about anything! ❤️

Thank you, Lilyanna, for being such a wonderfully versatile and willing member of our team. We are incredibly lucky to have you.

We are enormously proud of every single member of our permanent and bank teams who work together, support one another and happily step outside their usual roles when needed. It is that teamwork and flexibility that keeps Somer Valley House running like a well-oiled machine – even when half the country appears to have put their out-of-office on and disappeared on their summer holidays! ☀️😂

Different roles, one team, and one shared goal: making sure our residents live well, every single day. 💜

🚨🏆🌸 STOP EVERYTHING. SOUND THE TRUMPETS. RING THE BELLS. RELEASE THE DOVES. FIRE UP THE HALLELUJAH CHORUS AND SOMEBODY FETCH BRUCE A STRONG CUP OF TEA OR A TOT of RUM… 🌸🏆🚨

BECAUSE WE’VE ONLY GONE AND WON THE WHOLE BLOOMIN’ THING!!!

🏆🌿 SOMER VALLEY HOUSE IS OFFICIALLY THE OVERALL SOUTH WEST WINNER OF CRYSTAL IN BLOOM!!! 🌿🏆

Yes. OVERALL WINNER.

Not a “well done for taking part”.

Not a “lovely effort”.

Not even a “highly commended”.

We have apparently been judged, inspected and independently verified as being THE BLOOMIN’ BEST IN THE SOUTH WEST. 😂🌺🏆

We were going to ask Emma and Bruce to say a few words about their victory, but after consulting the rota, checking everyone’s annual leave allowance and establishing that nobody had packed an overnight bag, we decided against it.

Those two can TALK.

We’d have needed refreshments, sleeping bags and an interval. 😂

It all began several weeks ago when Emma walked into the office and uttered four words that now make Bruce visibly twitch:

“I’ve had an idea…”

Bruce immediately knew two things.

1. It would not be cheap.
2. Somehow, it would become his problem.

😂😂😂

Emma had decided that what Somer Valley House desperately needed was a beautiful, tranquil, spiritual ZEN GARDEN.

A peaceful oasis.

A sanctuary of calm.

A place for quiet reflection and mindfulness.

Which is ironic considering its construction caused absolutely NO PEACE, CALM OR TRANQUILLITY WHATSOEVER. 😂😂

Bruce was reportedly heard muttering:

“Oh God… not another one of her crazy ideas that I somehow have to make work.”

And thus began what can only be described as several weeks of horticultural warfare.

Emma would disappear for twenty minutes and return carrying a solar lantern, three Buddha statues, six wind chime, six artificial butterflies, a water feature, something she’d found reduced in a garden centre and an object nobody could actually identify.

She would then dump the lot in front of Bruce and announce confidently:

“You’ll make it work. I’ve got every faith in you.”

Which Bruce quickly discovered was Emma-language for:

“I’ve already bought it, I’ve lost the receipt, I have absolutely no idea where it’s going and I’m leaving now. Good luck.” 😂

At one point Bruce attempted a gentle intervention.

“Emma… have you ever heard the phrase LESS IS MORE?”

Emma had.

She simply chose to completely ignore it.

Apparently her gardening philosophy is more along the lines of:

“If there’s still a visible patch of soil or pergola WE’RE NOT FINISHED.” 😂🌺🌸🪴🦋✨

Then came WISTERIAGATE.

Bruce discovered that one of the easiest ways to push Emma towards complete horticultural collapse was to casually wander past and announce:

“Your wisteria’s in a twist.”

Cue Emma rocking gently in the corner, staring into the middle distance and muttering:

“It is NO coincidence that WISTERIA rhymes with HYSTERIA.” 😵‍💫🌿

We may put that on a plaque.

Then there was the hosepipe.

Oh, the hosepipe.

Every.

Single.

Time.

Emma would stand at the outside tap holding the connector, looking at it with the baffled expression of someone attempting to dock the International Space Station.

From somewhere across the garden would come Bruce’s exhausted voice:

“LEFTY LOOSEY… RIGHTY TIGHTY, EMMA.”

Emma would nod confidently.

Turn it the wrong way.

Look confused.

Turn it back.

Look at Bruce.

Turn it the wrong way again.

At one stage we believe the hosepipe itself gave up and asked to be transferred to another care home. 😂🚿

And then there was perhaps the most concerning part of the entire project…

Bruce frequently announcing:

“I’m just going outside to deadhead a few things.”

Nobody ever asked questions.

Because with a garden full of petunias and a short red-haired gardening apprentice who’d just arrived carrying another bag of solar-powered nonsense…

FRANKLY IT COULD HAVE GONE EITHER WAY. 😳😂😂😂

But somehow, amongst the chaos, the bickering, the watering, the planting, the drilling, the decorating, the evenings, the weekends, the twisted wisteria, the hosepipe trauma and Bruce repeatedly questioning every life choice that had brought him to this moment…

THEY ACTUALLY DID IT. ❤️🌿

What started as one of Emma’s slightly bonkers ideas became the most beautiful, peaceful and genuinely special Zen Garden for our residents and families to enjoy.

And now…

🏆 IT’S AN AWARD-WINNING ZEN GARDEN! 🏆

Winning the overall South West Crystal in Bloom title is an incredible achievement and a huge testament to the imagination, determination, teamwork and sheer graft that went into bringing this crazy little vision to life.

So congratulations to Emma and Bruce, our very own gardening dream team. ❤️

Emma supplied the vision, enthusiasm and approximately 738 completely unnecessary decorative objects.

Bruce supplied the practical skills, patience, tools and increasingly weary expression of a man who realised far too late that saying “yes” once had been a catastrophic error. 😂

And now that the competition is finally over, there’s just one thing left to say…

BRUCE, YOU CAN RELAX.

No more random ornaments.

No more twisted wisteria.

No more hosepipe tutorials.

No more “I’ve had an idea…”

The Zen Garden is FINISHED.
