A word from our director, John, on walking the 177 mile Offa’s D**e National Trail:

“This was the first time I have walked a long distance trail before. I have completed endurance events and strenuous mountain days in the past but I have never undertaken a long distance trail like this before, day after day. We decided to walk the trail in 10 days, which meant walking an average of over 17 miles per day, from the bottom of the Welsh/English border near Chepstow, to the north shore of Wales bordering the Irish sea.

What I enjoyed most about this walk was not just the challenge of the long distance journey, but how naturalistic and intrinsic it felt to always have a purpose at hand, to travel from A-B and to meet new people along the way. When you walk you get to see the landscape up close and personal, something you can't do by simply driving around. You get to retrace the footsteps of the past, interact with the local environment and engage within the local communities. That's what this trail felt like, we got to experience the past by walking 80 miles of the well preserved D**e built over 1200 years ago, experience the changing landscapes as we moved through rural Monmouthshire into the Welsh marches, through the Shropshire Hills, into the Vale of Montgomery and over the Clwydian Range. We got to experience the accent and dialect change and met locals with stories to share. We met others enjoying the D**e and made memories that we will keep forever.

Walking enables the mind to completely switch off, and through this walk I got to completely destress and my worries faded away. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip and getting to spend it with my good friends was the best way to spend a holiday and even better way to celebrate a birthday.

I would urge anyway to do Offa's D**e and even to undertake a long distance hike once in their lives.”

On Wednesday 22nd July, two of our directors, James & John, will set off on the 177 mile Offa’s D**e National trail, walking the border between Wales and England.
The route will take 10 days, averaging nearly 18 miles a day!
They’re doing this all to raise awareness of the importance of spending time in nature to improve your mental health, which is the very backbone of what Tracks&Dales believes in.
If you, or anyone you know has benefitted from our support, or you simply value the work we are doing, please donate to support James & John on this journey!
Thank you!

This Sunday, we were able to support The Well Communities’ residents reach the summit of Helvellyn!

We have been supporting The Well for a while now through smaller wellbeing walks and more recently, cold water swimming.

However, we wanted to ensure all beneficiaries felt heard so asked everyone what they would like from their time with us. The overriding answer was big mountain walks! With this in mind, we planned to involve the Carlisle, Kendal and Barrow groups to meet up together to climb the third highest mountain in The Lake District.

What an incredible achievement for all involved!

Thank you to Lauren, Holly and Alex for making this possible and supporting this walk!

As many of you know, everything we offer at Tracks&Dales is completely free. We never want cost to be a barrier for anyone who could benefit from getting outdoors and improving their mental health.

If Tracks&Dales has made a positive difference to you, and you're in a position to do so, we'd be so grateful if you would consider making a donation. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, helps us continue providing free walks and activities and gives more people the opportunity to experience the benefits of spending time outdoors.

If you're not able to donate, that's absolutely okay. Perhaps you could share our work with friends or family who might like to support what we do.

If you'd like to make a donation, you can do so here: https://buy.stripe.com/bJe6oIaXp6MD9vH4tHeUU00

Thank you for being part of the Tracks&Dales community. Your support—whether that's by joining us, volunteering, donating or simply spreading the word—helps us continue making a difference.

We’ve had some incredible walk and swim sessions recently with The Well Communities!

Last Friday we supported their Barrow residents for a walk and swim in Beacon Tarn, and when we supported the Kendal residents a week later, the Barrow group joined as they loved the week before so much!

We also managed a walk to the top of Beacon Fell for lovely views towards Coniston water.

These Friday sessions are getting better and better and we love the feedback we are getting from all of our beneficiaries!

Partner spotlight:

Carnforth & Milnthorpe Primary Care Network

Tracks&Dales approached the NHS in 2024, specifically their wellbeing team at the C&M PCN to offer mental health support to their patients.

Since then, we have been able to support, through their amazing team referring directly to us, over 70 walks and 100 beneficiaries, with indirect beneficiaries being around double this.

We have had over a 90% success rate with beneficiaries returning to our wellbeing programmes whether that be through 1-1 or group environments.

We have walked up mountains, along canals, climbed indoors and abseiled outdoors.

The impact has been incredible and we know the difference we are making to these peoples lives in South Cumbria and the Lancashire border.

We can’t thank Carnforth & Milnthorpe PCN enough for believing in the work we do. We know the effort their team put in each day to provide an amazing service and are able to support their patients through empathetic support and amazing signposting to other wonderful charitable organisations.
