Did you know that facial expressions in sign language aren’t just for emphasis; they’re mandatory?

Asking a deaf person to “tone down” their facial expressions because it makes others uncomfortable is not only offensive, but it also shows a misunderstanding of how sign language works.

Here’s why facial expressions matter:

1️⃣ They’re the “tone of voice” in sign language.
In spoken languages, you use tone, pitch, and volume to express emotion or clarify meaning. In sign language, facial expressions do the same. They aren’t extra; they’re essential for communicating fully and accurately.

2️⃣ It’s not about exaggeration; it’s about clarity.
What might look like exaggerated expressions to you are actually part of how deaf people ensure their signs are understood correctly. It’s how they show emotion, ask questions, and convey subtle differences in meaning.

3️⃣ Respect the language.
Just like you wouldn’t ask someone to speak without using tone or inflexion, don’t ask a deaf person to sign without facial expressions. It’s part of their language, and asking them to change it is both disrespectful and harmful.

Being deafblind doesn't define a person – it's just one part of who they are.

This Deafblind Awareness Week, the theme 'SeeHearUs' reminds us to recognise the skills, experiences, and contributions of deafblind people in our communities.

As a qualified Communicator Guide, Carron Huggett, Head of Carron PA Support is proud to help break down barriers and support meaningful connections.
