One of the greatest burdens of chronic pain isn't always the pain itself. It's the loneliness.
Reflecting on my clinic today, after nearly 30 years of working as a Consultant Health Psychologist with people living with chronic pain, one theme comes up again and again.
"I feel like no one really understands."
Many women tell me that, over time, pain has quietly shrunk their world. They stop saying yes to social invitations because they're worried they'll have to cancel. They find it difficult to explain why they look "fine" but feel exhausted.Friends and family often mean well but don't fully understand what living with persistent pain is really like.
Eventually, many women begin to feel isolated—not because they want to be alone, but because living with pain can make staying connected incredibly difficult.
Yet we know that social connection is one of the most powerful protective factors for both physical and psychological wellbeing. Feeling understood can reduce stress, build confidence and remind us that we don't have to navigate difficult days alone.
That's one of the reasons we've created our free online webinar, Introducing the Pain Reframe Retreat.
Alongside Larissa Clarke and Jacq Emkes, we'll be exploring:
✨ Why chronic pain affects far more than the body.
✨ How the nervous system influences pain.
✨ Practical, evidence-informed strategies that can help.
✨ The importance of connection when living with persistent pain
Most importantly, it's an opportunity to meet other women who simply get it.
If you live with chronic pain—or know someone who does—we'd love you to join us.
