Hospital volunteers make a huge difference and we are grateful to them every day!

Thank you to everyone who has ever volunteered their time to MKUH. We appreciate you 💙

Yesterday we celebrated our amazing volunteers at Milton Keynes University Hospital, by hosting a special afternoon-tea event.

These individuals give their time, compassion and energy to support patients, families and staff every single day 💙

We have more than 200 active volunteers making a real difference across the hospital, with volunteering continuing to grow. These roles include:

Ward volunteers
Gardeners
Patient experience volunteers taking practical items to patients
Pharmacy support
Volunteers in children’s and adult A&E
Bedside support for patients from the armed forces
And – our very special PAT dogs, who bring joy and smiles to patients throughout the hospital!

This year we also launched our very first Volunteer Driver Service, helping cancer patients attend vital treatment appointments while reducing stress for patients and their loved ones. What makes the driver service extra special is that one of our very own volunteers suggested and helped make it happen.

A special mention also goes to our amazing Butterfly Volunteers. This dedicated team provides comfort, companionship and practical support to patients receiving end-of-life care and their families during some of life's most difficult moments.

The impact of the programme continues to grow from 333 visits to patients and families in its launch year – 2023 – to 818 visits in 2025. In 2026, we’ve already made more than 600 visits.

One family shared: "The work you do is phenomenal and so appreciated. The gentle and sympathetic way we were treated was incredible."

From supporting patients on our wards, to helping maintain wellbeing gardens, driving patients to treatment, and being there when it matters most, our volunteers make an immeasurable difference to hospital life.

To every volunteer at MKUH: thank you. Your kindness, dedication and generosity of spirit help ensure that patients and families receive the very best support when they need it most. 🌟

Congratulations to the Children and Neonatal Community Nursing Team, winners of the Team of the Year award.

This “small but mighty” team was recognised for their passion, innovation and unwavering commitment - going the extra mile to support patients and families through challenging moments, and continually striving to improve care and experience for all.

Exciting progress for the future of our hospital! MKUH has signed a partnership agreement with Morgan Sindall Construction through the Hospital 2.0 Alliance, marking another major step towards delivering our new hospital building as part of the Government's New Hospital Programme.

The development will provide a new home for maternity and children's services, alongside additional surgical capacity, helping us meet the needs of our growing community.

This significant investment will support our vision of delivering a hospital fit for the future for patients, staff and our local community.

Researchers at Newcastle University are conducting a national survey and would like to hear about your experiences.

You can take part if you:

✔ Are pregnant
✔ Have been pregnant in the last 12 months
✔ Are a parent, guardian or carer of a baby aged 12 months or under
✔ Have been a parent, guardian or carer of a baby aged 12 months or under in the last year
✔ Are the partner of any of the above

Public Governor, Lois Adura, has helped us to get closer to what's happening in the community by attending a wide range of events in recent months. From attending celebrations at Monkston Community Centre to supporting our Tuberculosis Team with their awareness raising at Morrisons, Lois has listened to many local experiences of healthcare which will really help us to shape our services.

Saima was recognised for her dedication to both patients and colleagues - bringing warmth, creativity and positivity to every interaction, while driving improvements that are shaping the future of care at MKUH.

We were delighted to welcome local MPs Chris Curtis and Callum Anderson to the hospital this week to celebrate the opening of our new Imaging Centre and tour our wonderful new facility. The centre brings MRI, CT and ultrasound services together in one purpose-built location, improving the experience for patients and staff alike.

Since opening in May 2026, the centre has delivered nearly 8,000 patient scans and diagnostic examinations, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions, including cancer, stroke, cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal disorders.

As one of the major facilities delivered through the Milton Keynes New Hospital Programme, the Imaging Centre is another important step towards creating a hospital fit for the future.
