Grief isn’t only about missing the person who died.

It can be missing the person you had breakfast with. The plans you made together. The friends you saw as a couple. The role you had in someone’s life. Sometimes even the person you used to be.

These are known as secondary losses — the changes that ripple out from a bereavement and can affect our emotional, social and practical lives.

If this feels familiar, our one-off Ripples of Grief group offers a confidential and supportive space to explore these experiences with others who understand.

Wednesday 16 September, 10.30am–1pm at Longfield Community Hospice.

Tomorrow, Saturday 8 August, one of our incredible supporters will take on the Titlis Bergtrophy in Switzerland – climbing from Engelberg to the 3,239-metre summit of Titlis.

He’s doing it in memory of his brother-in-law, Andrew Jackson, a much-loved “gentle giant” who died from cancer on 26 May this year.

Ten years ago, Andrew stood on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Tomorrow, as his brother-in-law tackles 2,200 vertical metres and crosses the glacier to the Titlis summit, Andrew’s strength and memory will be with him every step of the way.

And he’s doing it for Longfield.

When Andrew and his wife Susan needed support most, our Hospice at Home team was there, visiting twice a day and providing care the family described as quite simply “heaven sent”.

Now, this extraordinary challenge is raising money so that Longfield can be there for more people like Andrew, and more families like Susan’s.

Please support this very special challenge if you can. Every donation, whatever the amount, will help us continue to provide care when families need us most.

When someone you love dies, this often brings more than one loss. Alongside bereavement, you may experience changes to your identity, relationships, routines, confidence and future plans. These "secondary losses" can feel just as significant and can leave you feeling isolated.

Our one-off Ripples of Grief support group offers a safe, confidential and supportive space to explore these experiences with others who understand.

Together, we'll help you recognise that these feelings are a normal part of grief and support you on your journey towards healing.
