Fantastic news 🙌🏽 my blood donor patients no longer need to feel conflicted about coming for acupuncture then having to wait four months to donate.

I fall into the category of “UK practitioner who meets local licensing rules” which means that beyond my degree level training, the Environmental Health dept comes to check over my premises before granting me a license…and yes I pay a pretty penny for that!

Just a reminder that acupuncture is currently an unregulated profession and so the title “acupuncturist” is not protected. This means you can have someone advertising acupuncture who has had very little training, even a weekend! Please, if you are going to a private practitioner who offers acupuncture, ask what training they’ve done and if they have been granted a council license.

Your safety is paramount in our profession. We’ve studied for years and are only too happy to tell you about it so never feel afraid to ask. It’s not cheeky, it’s making sure you are being treated safely.

Anyway…great news for you and for our profession.

Did you know, blood donation rules around acupuncture have changed today?

If you've had acupuncture through the NHS, from a registered healthcare professional, or from a UK practitioner who meets local licensing requirements, you can usually donate blood straight away.

If your practitioner doesn't fall into one of these categories, you'll need to wait four months before donating.

Hey 👋🏽 the schools finished up yesterday for Summer hols here in Moffat so as usual I’ll be taking a break from the socials to spend some focused time with the fam until the boys go back late August.

Ah but acupuncture is just placebo effect and woowoo. Is it aye? 🤔

A recent article from the American Animal Hospital Association highlights how veterinary acupuncture works through:

• Peripheral nerve stimulation (where pain signals begin)
• Modulation of sensory pathways and pain processing
• Effects on fascia, interstitial fluid dynamics, and immune signalling
• Support of overall homeostasis across multiple systems

In practice, it’s rarely a stand-alone treatment - it sits alongside medication, rehabilitation and other strategies as part of a multimodal approach to pain management, particularly in chronic conditions like osteoarthritis.

What’s especially interesting is this: animals respond to acupuncture without expectation, belief or narrative. The mechanisms are doing the work regardless…with no placebo effect to lean on.

Humans may bring a story to treatment, animals just bring a nervous system.
