Blocked ears? Before you reach for a cotton bud… 👂

A recent Saga article looks at some of the best – and worst – ways to deal with blocked ears. One of the key reminders is that cotton buds and other DIY methods can actually push wax further into the ear and potentially cause damage.

If your ears feel blocked, your hearing seems muffled or you’re experiencing discomfort, it’s worth having them checked rather than trying to tackle the problem yourself. Ear wax is one of the most common causes of that blocked sensation.

Our experienced audiologists offer professional ear wax removal using microsuction, with no GP referral needed.

Expert advice on the best and worst ways to clear ears blocked by wax or fluid.

🎧 Train loud. Bus loud. Earbuds or headphones louder?

When you are commuting, walking through town or sitting on a busy bus, it is easy to keep nudging the volume up without really noticing.

The problem is that your ears may be competing with traffic, engines, conversations and background noise and long periods of loud listening can increase the risk of noise-related hearing damage and tinnitus.

Instead of turning the volume up to drown everything out, try checking your volume level regularly, taking listening breaks and considering noise-cancelling headphones so you are not battling against the world around you.

🎧 It is easy to turn your volume up without even realising - especially when you're in the car, watching television, walking, commuting or, exercising with headphones or trying to block out background noise.

But listening at high volume for long periods can put your hearing at risk and may increase the chance of tinnitus or noise-related hearing damage.

Your ears were not designed for full volume all day, every day. Try keeping the volume at a safer level, taking regular listening breaks and avoiding the temptation to compete with noisy surroundings.

🏋️ Gyms can already be noisy places, with music, machines and background chatter all adding to the volume around you. If you then turn your earbuds up even higher to compete, your ears could be getting more noise exposure than you realise.

Listening at high volume for long periods may increase the risk of hearing damage and tinnitus, so it is worth keeping an eye on your volume, taking regular listening breaks and considering noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds instead of simply turning the sound up.

Protecting your hearing does not mean giving up your workout - it just means listening more wisely.

On 24th July, Samaritans Awareness Day reminds us that support is available around the clock for anyone who is struggling. 💚

Hearing loss can make conversations more difficult and social situations feel exhausting, sometimes causing people to withdraw from friends, family and the activities they once enjoyed. Over time, this can increase feelings of loneliness and isolation and have a significant effect on emotional wellbeing.

Looking after your hearing is about far more than hearing sounds clearly. It helps us stay connected to the people and experiences that matter.

If life feels difficult, you do not have to face it alone. The Samaritans are available to listen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Call free on 116 123 - it won't even show on your phone bill.
