The Living Body brings the work of Essential Somatics, in the lineage of Thomas Hanna, PhD, to Dundee this autumn. 🌿

Here's something most of us were never taught: muscles aren't really designed to be stretched. They're designed to contract and release. Chronic tension isn't your muscles being "tight" - it's your brain holding onto a contraction pattern it learned, often years ago, and has simply forgotten how to let go of. Hanna called this Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA).

Over six weekly sessions, you'll learn pandiculation, the technique your nervous system actually uses to release tension, the same way a cat or dog does every time it wakes up and stretches. It's not exercise. It's re-education.

This isn't just useful for six weeks - it's a skill for life. Many people find that as they learn to notice these patterns in their body, they start noticing them in how they live more broadly: where they brace, where they push too hard, where they've stopped paying attention entirely.

The Living Body joins our existing series in Glasgow and Edinburgh, and if there's demand, more towns and cities will follow. It only takes people being curious enough to show up.

Six Tuesday mornings, 10:00–12:30, Harmony Hall, Dundee. £180 for the full series. No experience needed.

t's been a few months in the making, and it's now confirmed.

This September, The Soma Room is bringing The Intelligent Body to Glasgow - a two-day somatic movement intensive led by Katrin Neue, founder of SOMAdublin and one of Ireland's most experienced Hanna Somatics educators.

Katrin trained under Essential Somatics founder Martha Peterson and has been running sold-out intensives in Finland for several years. This is the first time she's brought this format to Scotland.

The weekend works through the core principles of Thomas Hanna's Clinical Somatic Education - the sensory motor patterns, the reflexes of stress and held tension, and how the nervous system can relearn ease and self-regulation. It's floor-based, carefully paced, and suitable for complete beginners and experienced movement professionals alike.

📅 Friday 25 & Saturday 26 September 2026
📍 The Gold Room, The Boardwalk, 105 Brunswick Street, Glasgow G1 1TF
👥 Strictly limited to 30 attendees
💷 Early bird £235 (first 15 places) · Standard £260
📋 Certificate of attendance issued, suitable for CPD self-certification

🌿 WORLD SPINE DAY — 16 OCTOBER 🌀

Location: Links Health Centre, Montrose

This year, The Soma Room - Montrose is delighted to celebrate World Spine Day by offering staff the chance to experience a short, relaxing Vertebral (Spinal) Highlighting session.

✨ What’s Spinal Highlighting?
It’s a gentle, hands-on process drawn from Clinical Somatics - based on the pioneering work of Thomas Hanna, PhD. In just 10–15 minutes, we explore the length and flow of your spine, inviting your nervous system to release tension and rediscover ease.

Most of us carry tension in our backs without even realising it. This short experience is a wonderful way to “wake up” your spine, relieve some of that hidden tension, and feel more at home in your own body.

🪄 Comfortable, calming, and quietly powerful.
🧘 Gentle movement. Deep listening. Lasting benefits.

📍 Staff sessions all day at Links Health Centre

💚 Public clients are warmly invited to explore this further as part of a full Clinical Somatic session right here in Montrose, Bonnie Scotland.

Strength begins with softness.

We’re taught that strength means pushing harder, holding longer, bracing more. But real, sustainable strength isn’t rigid - it’s adaptable.

Your body is designed to move between engagement and release. When one side of that equation is missing, muscles fatigue, joints strain, and movement loses its natural ease.

❌ Myth: “To get stronger, you must push harder.”
✅ Truth: Strength comes from balance - the ability to activate and let go with equal skill.

In Clinical Somatics, we retrain the nervous system to restore this balance. That’s when strength feels effortless, posture feels lighter, and your body can meet the demands of daily life without burnout.

🌀 True strength is supple, responsive, and alive.

One Small Reset
A reset doesn’t have to be big.
It can be a moment.
A breath.
A noticing.

When life feels busy, the idea of “resetting” can feel like a big task - something you need time, energy, or a perfect set of circumstances for.

But in somatic work, we learn that change begins in the smallest places:
✨ The moment you notice your jaw is tight and let it soften.
✨ The pause to feel your feet grounded before your next step.
✨ The slow exhale that tells your nervous system, “We’re safe.”

Every time you bring awareness to your body, you’re giving yourself a chance to reset.
And these little resets, repeated often, have the power to transform how you move, how you feel, and how you meet your day.

So this Monday, ask yourself:
What’s one small reset I can give myself right now?

Pain is not the enemy - it’s a messenger.

When you feel pain, it’s easy to think something is “wrong” or “damaged.” But pain is not always an injury report.

Often, it’s your nervous system’s way of saying:
“Something needs to change.”

❌ Myth: “Pain means damage.”
✅ Truth: Pain is often a protective response - your brain keeping you safe by limiting movement, even when no physical damage is present.

In Clinical Somatics, we listen to pain, not fight it. By understanding what your nervous system is protecting you from, we can gently retrain movement patterns so your brain no longer needs to sound the alarm.

🌀 You’re not broken — you’re being called to pay attention.
