🚨 Unpopular opinion: Tight calves don’t always need more stretching.

If your calves constantly feel tight, stiff or restricted, your first instinct might be to stretch them.

But sometimes… stretching isn’t the answer. 👀

That “tight” feeling can be your body’s way of creating stability, protection or control — not simply a sign that the muscle is too short.

Other things worth considering:

🏃‍♀️ Training load – Have you suddenly increased your running, walking or exercise?

💪 Strength & endurance – Are your calves strong enough for what you’re asking them to do?

🦶 Foot & ankle mobility – Is the ankle actually moving well, or are the calves compensating?

⚖️ Movement patterns – Are you loading one side more than the other?

😴 Recovery – Are your muscles getting enough time to recover between sessions?

🔥 Overuse – Sometimes the answer is less loading, not more stretching.

So before aggressively stretching your calves every day, ask yourself:

“Why do they feel tight in the first place?”

Because treating the reason behind the tightness is often far more useful than repeatedly chasing the sensation.

👉 If your calves are constantly tight despite stretching, it might be time to look at the bigger picture.

😅 Ever stood up from the sofa and sounded like a bowl of Rice Krispies?

Click… crack… groan…

Then comes the classic:
🤔 “Why am I like this?”

A lot of people blame it on getting older, but age isn’t always the whole story.

Often, stiffness, aches, reduced mobility, and low energy are your body’s way of telling you it needs a little more support, movement, and attention.

At Gourdon Sports Massage, we don’t just focus on where it hurts.

✔ Full movement assessments
✔ Tailored treatment plans
✔ Evidence-based treatment
✔ Ongoing support and advice

Our goal is to help you move better, feel stronger, and understand what your body actually needs—not just provide a temporary fix.

Because “getting older” shouldn’t mean accepting pain, stiffness, or limitations as your new normal. 💪

Your body is built to move. Let’s help it do exactly that.

Even though I run my clinic from home, I still think it’s important to properly “show up” for work.

That’s why I wear a uniform and get ready as if I’m leaving for a clinic every single time I have a client booked in. The switch from comfy lounge clothes to work clothes helps me change mindset and turn up ready to give my full attention and energy to each person who walks through the door 💆‍♀️✨

Working from home can blur the lines sometimes, but creating that routine helps me stay professional, focused, and ready to give every client the best experience possible 🤍

Does anyone else who works from home have a little routine that helps them get into “work mode”? Comment below and let me know👇

Me attempting to switch off after a busy clinic day… meanwhile my brain is like:
📅 schedule clients
📝 finish SOAP notes
💪 send rehab plans
🧺 tackle the mountain of washing

Being a sports therapist definitely doesn’t end when the last client leaves 😅 There’s a whole behind-the-scenes world that nobody really sees, but honestly I love every part of it.

Busy days, tired feet, endless laundry and all 🤍💆‍♀️

Any other self-employed people struggle to actually “switch off” at the end of the day? 😂 Comment with the job your brain refuses to clock out from 👇

Some mornings start with fresh towels, calming music, and getting the clinic ready for a busy day ahead. Other mornings also involve taking a moment to prepare myself mentally — to show up as a calm, professional therapist for every client who walks through the door. ✨

No two days are ever the same in clinic life. Every person arrives with different needs, injuries, stress levels, and challenges they’re navigating. That’s one of the things I love most about this work — the connection, the conversations, and being able to create a space where people can switch off, breathe, and feel looked after.

Helping clients manage pain, recover from injuries, and find a little calm during their massage session is something I never take for granted. 🤍

Ready for another busy day doing what I love. 💆‍♀️

💚 COMMUNITY SUPPORT 💚

At Gourdon Sports Massage, we strongly believe that exercise and sport are about so much more than just keeping fit.

Movement can be a huge outlet for people mentally as well as physically — helping reduce stress, improve wellbeing, build confidence, and support mental health through some of life’s toughest moments.

That’s why I wanted to share Gary’s incredible challenge 👏

This July, Gary will be cycling over 700 miles in 7 days, visiting all 42 professional Scottish football clubs to raise awareness and support for mental health, while fundraising for the Samaritans. 🚴‍♂️

His message really resonated with me:
Sport gives many of us an escape, a release, and a sense of connection — and this challenge is about encouraging conversations around mental health and reminding people that it’s okay to ask for help.

What an incredible thing to do for such an important cause 💚

If anyone would like to support Gary, whether that’s through donating, sharing his story, or simply following his journey, it would mean a lot.
