Standing on Scotswood Bridge for the Blaydon Race! | Smiles, Cheers & North East Running Spirit
Forget running it this year – I had the best view point!
Armed with a loud voice and plenty of enthusiasm, I spent the evening on Scotswood Bridge cheering on every single lad and lass tackling the iconic Blaydon Race. The smiles, waves, thumbs up and occasional grimace made for a fantastic night of spectating.
The Blaydon Race is one of the North East's most loved running traditions. First held in 1981, the 5.9-mile route follows the journey described in George "Geordie" Ridley's famous 1862 song, "The Blaydon Races", and takes place each year on the 9th of June. Before the runners set off, the crowd joins together to sing the famous anthem – a tradition that never fails to raise the hairs on the back of your neck.
From my spot on Scotswood Bridge, I got to witness thousands of determined runners making their way towards Blaydon, proving once again why this race is such a huge part of North East culture and running heritage.
To everyone who ran, volunteered, marshalled or supported – well done! What a night.
