"The biggest mistake I see with toenail fungus is treating it before you actually know it's fungus. About half of all abnormal nails are not caused by fungus. Trauma, infection, psoriasis, and aging changes can all affect the nails. A nail clipping sent to the pathologist or for PCR studies can confirm a fungal infection. If it is fungus, set realistic expectations. Even though the treatment works, it can sometimes take 18 months for a nail to grow back normally."
