It's easy to think of breastmilk as "just milk"... but it's so much more than that.

It's a living fluid, constantly changing to meet your baby's needs. It contains antibodies, beneficial bacteria, hormones, enzymes, stem cells, healthy fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, all working together to nourish, protect and support your baby's development.

One of the most incredible things? Breastmilk changes not only as your baby grows, but even during a feed and when they're unwell, adapting to what they need at that moment.

Our bodies really are amazing.

Whether you're breastfeeding directly, expressing, combination feeding, or your feeding journey looked different than you expected, this isn't about comparison. It's simply about appreciating the incredible biology behind human milk.

So much thought and energy goes into the labour and birth process, it can be easy to forget about the part that comes after.

The hospital gives you your baby and sends you on your way. Do you know how to care for a newborn? Are you aware about the changes your body goes through? Or how to navigate your new normal?

Investing in your postpartum recovery is as important as buying a pram or preparing for the birth.

Investing in knowledge is priceless to your recovery. Education, nutrition, emotional and physical support. That may come in the form of overnight support, learning how to care for yourself and your baby, practical help or emotional care. YOU are worth investing in.

You may not use every gadget that you buy, but you'll be greatful you prioritised yourself.

Only 48% of babies worldwide are exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months, despite recommendations from the World Health Organization. Increasing breastfeeding rates could help prevent hundreds of thousands of child deaths each year and improve lifelong health for millions of families.

This World Breastfeeding Week, let's celebrate, support and protect breastfeeding, because every family deserves the support they need to reach their feeding goals.

The journey through parenthood is a very individual one. Some sail through it, but most don't.

It's a rollercoaster of emotions. We can feel guilty for wanting our old life back, but love the little baby infront of us. Then question why we feel this way.

All of your feelings and emotions are valid, all at the same time. There's no rule book for navigating this time in our lives.

It's always good to talk to someone if you're struggling. Equally, if you’re loving it... good for you.

If you have people around you that are keen to help.
One of my favourite sayings is;

'It takes a villiage to raise a baby'

Not everyone has someone. But if you do, could they drop off some nourishing food? Do the laundry?
Take up the support, so you can get to know your baby and adapt to the 'new normal'

Dear new parent…

Your baby is not “spoiled” because they want to be held.
You haven’t created a bad habit because your baby needs contact naps.

You haven’t done anything wrong because your baby cries, struggles to settle, or seems to only want you.
Newborns are not born knowing how to regulate their emotions, digest their milk, sleep independently, or understand the world around them. They are adjusting from the safest, most familiar place they have ever known, the womb,to a completely new environment.

Things like:
🤍 Contact naps
🤍 Frequent feeding and cluster feeding
🤍 Colic and periods of intense crying
🤍 Reflux and digestive discomfort
🤍 A baby who settles only with mum
🤍 A baby who settles more easily with dad or another caregiver
🤍 A fussy or easily overwhelmed baby
🤍 Short naps and frequent waking
🤍 Needing movement, rocking or being held to sleep

…are all things many babies experience.

They are not a reflection of your parenting.
They are not proof you are creating “bad habits”.
They are signs that your baby is communicating a need for comfort, connection, regulation and support.
Your job is not to make your baby fit into life straight away.
Your job is to get to know your baby, respond with love, and give yourself grace while you both learn each other.

And remember, the person caring for the baby also needs caring for.

It's important that when choosing someone to support you antenatally, during birth, the postpartum period, or with your baby, that they not only have knowledge, but real life experience.

Providers that have navigated the system, can reassure you about what's normal and what's not normal. Can explain and help you understand.

That they can guide you and help you navigate difficult times with confidence.

This doesn't mean one educator/support is better than another. Ensure you're choosing someone that can provide what you are looking for.
