NeuroClnx

NeuroClnx NeuroClnx - pioneering memory, Alzheimer's and brain health clinical research.

NeuroClin Glasgow is an independent research organisation engaged in national and international clinical studies that seek to find better treatments for those with memory impairment, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s, Dementia, Depression and other neurological conditions. We are currently accepting applicants across Scotland for research studies into Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Depression. We aim to ensure the highest standards of care and attention for those participating in our research programmes. We are the only centre in Scotland which has conducted research on all of the currently licensed treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. It is now generally accepted that people who do come forward and participate in research have better overall outcomes.

Today is World Alzheimer's Day.

Most of the care in this country is given at kitchen tables, on the phone at eleven at night, by people who never applied for the job.

If that’s you, a few things are worth knowing.

In Scotland you can ask your local council for an adult carer support plan in your own right, separate from the person you look after. In England the equivalent is a carer's assessment from your local authority.

Alzheimer Scotland runs a 24-hour freephone dementia helpline on 0808 808 3000.

In England, the Alzheimer's Society dementia support line is 0333 150 3456. Both are free to call.

And if your relative has a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment or early or later stage Alzheimer's disease, there may be research studies near you they could be considered for.

Families often tell us that taking part gave them something active to do at a point when everything else felt out of their hands.

Today though, mostly this. It counts, and your care is noticed.

Alzheimer's studies are for every stage of the disease.

Trials can be recruiting for mild cognitive impairment, early Alzheimer's disease, often soon after a diagnosis, right through to those living with later stage symptoms like agitation.

What does taking part usually involve?

A phone conversation to check the basics.

A screening visit with detailed memory testing and health checks.

Regular study visits with a consistent team.

And a study partner, usually a spouse or an adult child, who comes along to appointments.

Reasonable travel expenses are covered, and people can stop at any point without giving a reason.

Eligibility is set by each study and checked properly before anything else happens, so a short conversation is all it takes to find out.

What happens at a private memory assessment?

People often put it off because they don’t know what they’re walking into. So here it is, step by step.

Step one is an in-clinic consultation with a specialist consultant, with fuller memory testing and an assessment.

Step two, if needed, is diagnostics, tailored to what the consultation finds. This can include brain imaging, routine blood tests to look for other causes of memory problems, and an ECG. Depending on the picture it can also include blood-based biomarker testing or genetic analysis.

Step three is a follow up consultation to go through the results and set out the options.

Step four - you leave with a clear plan. This can include lifestyle changes and access to treatments, depending on suitability.

You leave with a clear picture of what the results show and a written summary of what happens next.

Ordinary forgetfulness is normal. Everyone loses their keys.

What’s worth looking at is a change. Something that’s different from how someone was a year ago, and that’s getting in the way of everyday life.

Many causes of memory problems are treatable, and plenty have nothing to do with dementia at all. An assessment tells you what you’re dealing with.

Our private memory and brain health service offers specialist consultation and diagnostics at our clinic in Glasgow.

September is World Alzheimer's Month.

For a lot of families, it starts with something small. A name that won’t come. A conversation repeated twice in an hour. A route that suddenly feels unfamiliar.

Those moments are worth paying attention to, because knowing either way is easier than wondering.

Through the month we will be sharing what we do at NeuroClnx. From clinical research into new approaches to diagnosing and treating conditions like Alzheimer's disease to private memory and brain health assessments.

We’ll cover what an assessment involves, what taking part in research means, and where families can find support.

Follow along if you’d find it useful.

Our volunteers play an essential role in advancing medical research.

Over 30 years ago, Susan and her husband Jim co-founded Niemann-Pick UK after their sons were diagnosed with the condition, at a time when they were told they were the only family in the UK affected.

What began as a search for answers and connection has grown into a national charity supporting families and bringing together clinicians and researchers to improve understanding of a condition now recognised as a form of childhood dementia.

The charity’s work, built over decades by families, volunteers, and supporters, has recently been recognised with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service- an honour that reflects sustained dedication and community impact. A wonderful example to us all.

Today, Susan is participating as a volunteer in a memory impairment clinical trial with NeuroClin.

Her involvement reflects a long-standing commitment to supporting research efforts that may benefit future generations.

Clinical research depends on people like Susan who are willing to take part in studies. Each volunteer contribution helps improve understanding and move the field closer to potential treatments.

We are sincerely grateful to Susan and to everyone who takes part in research- your involvement makes a real and lasting difference!
