What are community-led approaches?

Community-led approaches put people, relationships and local strengths at the centre of health and social care.

Healthcare Improvement Scotland has developed these resources to help people explore how community-led approaches can support prevention, collaborative working and make better use of local strengths and resources.

They can help us make support easier to access, build community connections and move towards more relational, people-led ways of working.

This week’s resource is an introduction to community-led approaches including key enablers: What are community-led approaches?

The Current Landscape of Fragility Fracture Care in the People’s Republic of China

As China’s population ages, improving fragility fracture care is becoming an increasingly urgent priority.

A recent article highlights advances in robotic-assisted surgery, innovative fracture treatments, and the benefits of orthogeriatric co-management in improving outcomes and reducing mortality.

Despite this progress, challenges remain in secondary fracture prevention, sarcopenia and fall prevention, and the development of a national hip fracture registry.

The key message? Better fragility fracture care goes beyond surgery. Strengthening multidisciplinary care, expanding Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), and prioritizing rehabilitation and prevention are essential to improving outcomes and reducing future fractures.

Fragility fractures constitute a major global health burden and often result from falls. However, clinical care for fragility fractures is currently organized separately from fall prevention services leading to gaps in integrated care delivery. A new IOF position statement assesses the potential link between MGUS and fracture risk and offers the first clinical guidance on bone health for patients with MGUS.

📄 Read the full paper (Open Access) here: https://bit.ly/4jKNlAv

Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a haematological condition among older adults, yet its impact on bone health is not widely recognised.

IOF hopes the Bone Cancer Working Group's new position statement will raise awareness of this challenging condition and encourage timely recognition and appropriate management of bone fragility in patients with MGUS, such as screening for MGUS when investigating a fragility fracture, undertaking a comprehensive bone evaluation when clinical MGUS is diagnosed, and treating patients at risk with antiresorptive agents at osteoporosis rather than oncology doses.

The paper will be especially relevant to GPs, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, haematologists, gynaecologists, geriatricians, advanced practice nurses, and internists.
