💜 What really helps young people remember that they are not alone?

NottAlone's co-founders Dr Maddi Popoola and Dr Órlaith Green were asking just that at NottAlone Live last month.

This special episode of The NottAlone Podcast, recorded at the event, includes lots of insights from organisers, workshop providers, school staff and young people about why it's so important to get together and talk about mental health.

We’re still on a high after two incredible days of NottAlone Live this week! 💜🧡

We can’t thank everyone involved enough, from the workshop leaders, stallholders and staff to every single young person who attended our event.

NottAlone Live always holds such a special place in all our hearts, because we get to see the genuine impact it has on the young people who attend. We’ve seen them grow in confidence, try new things and make new friends, all while learning about looking after their mental health and wellbeing.

These events are so important for our young people, we can’t wait to do it all again next year!

✨ We had an amazing first day at NottAlone Live 2026! ✨

Hundreds of children and young people from Nottingham and Nottinghamshire primary schools came together to talk about mental health and learn how to look after their mental wellbeing.

This year, students from Arnold Hill Academy chose the event theme of 'Self-Care Summer' and took part in running workshops to get younger children talking about what's good for their mental wellbeing.

Workshops also covered important lessons about managing worries, friendships and good mental health, as well as activities offering creative or physical outlets such as yoga, dance, art, and creating rap songs about mental health.

Local mental health support providers also came along to meet the young people so they could also learn about the support available to them and hopefully, feel more knowledgeable about where to go if they need help.

We can't wait to do it all again tomorrow with secondary school pupils from across the city and county 🤩

Starting a conversation about mental health isn’t always easy — especially when it’s someone you really care about.

You might worry about saying the wrong thing, or not knowing how to help. But the truth is, you don’t need perfect words — just showing up and asking “Are you okay?” can mean more than you realise.

If someone’s been on your mind lately, this could be your sign to check in. Keep it simple. Be kind. Listen without trying to fix everything. Sometimes, just knowing someone cares can make all the difference 💚

🎧 Want a little guidance on how to start that conversation?
We’ve released a short 22-minute bonus episode of The NottAlone Podcast this , with practical tips from Dr Maddi and Dr Orlaith on how to start the conversation and what to do next.

Find it wherever you listen to podcasts, just search for The NottAlone Podcast, or visit www.NottAlone.org.uk/TheNottAlonePodcast

Is a friend acting differently? 🤔

You want to talk to them about it, but you’re not sure what to say?
Sometimes, just starting a conversation can feel like the hardest part.

Here are a few simple ways to open the door:
💭 Ask gentle questions like “are you okay?” — and don’t be afraid to ask again.
💭 Share what you’ve noticed (changes in behaviour) rather than making assumptions.
💭 Let them know you’re there, even if they’re not ready to talk yet.
💭 Choose calm, low pressure settings and shared activities (like going for a walk), and make sure they can step away if they need to.

These tips - and much more - are covered in the latest episode of The NottAlone Podcast, where hosts Dr Maddi and Dr Orlaith discuss how to start a conversation with someone you’re worried about and why talking about mental health matters.

This short 22-minute bonus episode has been released for Mental Health Awareness Week, to help get people talking about mental health, and to remind you that you don’t have to have all the answers to start a conversation and make a difference.
