Progress comes in many different shapes and sizes.

The key thing is it's not about perfection. It's about improvement and consistency over time.

Are these movements perfect? No they are not.
But have they shown signs of improvement and progression? For sure.

Is there still room for improvement? Definitely.

Just to add. Never stop trying to get strong. It's the biggest thing you can do in training for longevity

I originally implemented this exercise back in 2013 when experimenting with rehab following a big car crash.
It's been around 13 years since doing it.

3 weeks ago I decided to play around with it again
So we are on week 3 and it's looking pretty good. Still not there yet.

When I put it in a couple of weeks ago it was replicated within the gym using a TRX.

It's pretty cool that people see my stuff and think that's useful for what I'm working on. Is a trend setter a good thing?

This hits different though as it allows you to get deeper and the weight acts as counter balance.

When performing a pistol squat you find you hit a sticking point where you either fall backwards or forwards and can't hit depth.

So I experimented with adding a small weight and it certainly helped back then. And the same applies now

To answer the previous question of
" Does a super heavy kettlebell swing not hurt your back/do your back in. All about context as always

Swing the kettlebell. Don't let the kettlebell swing you

A nice little progress update from April 2026
So exactly a year on from Richard's accident in the dining room which resulted in a fracture to the right femur. This can be quite a serious injury, especially at 90 years old.
We are doing well. Injury's can be both short and long term and less/more serious but you shouldn't let them stop you progressing and improving to a certain point.

Obviously there can be contra Indications and certain factors preventing the above. However you need to remain as mobile and as strong as you can using the right methods of progression.

Does the exercise have a purpose?

This is the question I always ask when programming an exercise.
It's also the question I expect from my clients when implementing exercises. I like it when they ask. It means they are learning and not just blindly following.

Blindly following and copy/pasting is not ideal. Purposeful exercise and learning is.

Which brings me to this. I've been implementing this exercise for a good few years. Not very often. Only when It has a purpose. I've generally implemented it as way of getting the adductors working or creating a different way of perfuming similar to a side lunge without the bend on the knee, minimizing knee bend or minimizing flexion.

This for the most part or majority of people is actually less effective. You are then taking away the work from the quads and glutes that a side lunge would gain. There's not a better or worse. Only effective/less effective depending on the goal.

It's a great stretch on the adductors and a useful way of loading them without bending the knee too much

However, the side lunge is better if you're able to access the movement.

If you can't perform a side lunge to a decent range of motion and you're elevating to trying to achieve a good side lunge. That would defeat the object entirely. You're reducing the range by elevating.
