Ticks are small spider-like creatures that are commonly found in long grass, woodland, heathland, and areas where animals graze. They're most active during the spring and summer months.
Most tick bites are harmless, but some ticks can carry bacteria that cause Lyme disease, so it's important to remove them as soon as possible.
If you find a tick:
โ๏ธ Remove it promptly using a tick removal tool or fine-tipped tweezers
โ๏ธ Pull upwards steadily without twisting or squeezing the tick
โ๏ธ Clean the bite area with soap and water or an antiseptic
โ๏ธ Avoid using petroleum jelly, nail varnish, or a lit match to remove the tick
To help prevent tick bites:
๐ Wear long sleeves and trousers when walking through long grass or woodland
๐งฆ Tuck trousers into your socks if you're in high-risk areas
๐งด Use an insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin
๐ Check yourself, children, and pets for ticks after spending time outdoors
โ ๏ธ Contact your GP if you develop a circular or expanding rash (often described as a "bull's-eye" rash), flu-like symptoms, or feel unwell after a tick bite.
