At Kirsty Harris Physiotherapy we provide expert Physiotherapy consultations and treatments tailored to all your musculoskeletal, orthopaedic and sports injury needs. Hi, I’m Kirsty Harris, an experienced musculoskeletal physiotherapist passionate about helping you recover from pain, injury, and surgery. I qualified with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy from the University of Huddersfield in 2005 and

have worked in a variety of settings, including the NHS, private practice, the Ministry of Defence, and sports physiotherapy. I started my career working in NHS hospitals across South Wales, treating patients both on the wards and in outpatient clinics. Early on, I developed a strong passion for musculoskeletal physiotherapy, which led me to progress into senior NHS roles. I developed my skills to become an Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Practitioner at Royal Berkshire NHS Trust, where I had the privilege of working closely with a world-renowned shoulder professor at the Reading Shoulder Unit. In this role, I was responsible for assessing, treating, and rehabilitating patients with a wide range of complex shoulder and upper limb conditions, many of which were both challenging and fascinating. In 2014, I moved into locum work, primarily within the Ministry of Defence, where I worked as a Senior Physiotherapist in residential rehabilitation, outpatient clinics, and multidisciplinary assessment teams. My role involved treating military personnel with a wide range of sports-related and general injuries, as well as rehabilitating soldiers with life-changing injuries, supporting their transition out of the forces and helping them plan for their future as civilians. Alongside my clinical work, I have always had a keen interest in sports physiotherapy, providing pitch-side cover and injury management for amateur and academy-level rugby teams. Throughout my career, I have developed a wide range of expertise, combining hands-on treatments, rehabilitation techniques, and personalised exercise programs to help my patients recover, move better, and stay pain-free. My skills include:

✅ Mobilisation & Manipulation
✅ Acupuncture, Dry Needling & Injection Therapy
✅ Pilates (Trained with APPI – a world-leading provider)
✅ Shockwave Therapy & Taping
✅ Developing tailored rehabilitation and exercise programs

I love working with people from all backgrounds—whether you're recovering from surgery, managing an injury, or simply looking to improve movement and prevent pain. I particularly enjoy teaching classes and empowering my patients to take control of their health and well-being.

Told you have osteoarthritis? Here's what that diagnosis doesn't tell you.

One of the most common things patients say to me is: "I've been told I have osteoarthritis — does that mean I'll need a knee replacement eventually?"

It sounds logical...But a diagnosis alone doesn't predict that at all.

I've seen patients with significant changes on their scans who have very little pain. And others with fairly mild changes who are really struggling.

A diagnosis is a starting point for understanding your knee — not a prediction of your future.

That's exactly what I explore in this week's video: 🎥 What Does an Osteoarthritis Diagnosis Actually Mean for Your Knee?

Can rehab really help if your meniscus can't heal on its own?

The good news is...Rehab was never about the meniscus healing itself.

It's about training the muscles around the knee — quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves — to take on more of the meniscus's workload. So the knee stays supported, even when the meniscus itself can't fully heal.

I've seen people get back to walking, golf, gardening and the activities they love this way. Even with a tear that was never going to heal on a scan.

That's one of the reasons I've started my weekly YouTube series and Knowledge Centre — to help people understand their knees and feel more confident about managing them.

This week's video explains exactly how rehab helps, even when surgery isn't part of the picture.

Will your meniscus tear heal on its own?

One of the most common things patients ask me is: "My scan showed a tear... does that mean I definitely need surgery?"

It sounds logical...

But the answer depends on more than just having a tear.

Tears in the outer part of the meniscus have a rich blood supply.

That gives them a real chance of healing.

Tears deeper in don't heal as easily.

But that doesn't mean surgery.

Often, a structured rehab plan works really well instead.

Understanding this is often the first step to feeling less worried about a diagnosis.

That's exactly what I explore in this week's video: 🎥 What Does a Meniscus Tear Actually Mean For Your Knee?

Does every meniscus tear need surgery?

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear in clinic is:

"I've got a tear, so I'll need an operation."

It sounds logical...

But that's not always the case.

It depends on the type of tear. Where it's located. And the symptoms you're actually experiencing.

Understanding this can take a lot of the fear out of a diagnosis. And for many people, rehab alone turns out to be a genuinely effective way forward.

That's exactly what I explore in this week's video:

🎥 What Does a Meniscus Tear Actually Mean For Your Knee?

If you've been told you've got a meniscus tear, or you're waiting on MRI results, I think you'll find this really reassuring.

What if your scan isn't the whole story?

One of the most common things patients say to me is:

"My MRI showed arthritis... so I suppose there's nothing I can do."
Or...
"I've got a meniscal tear... does that mean my knee will always hurt?"

The good news is...

Your scan doesn't determine your future.

Scans are incredibly useful and help us understand what's happening inside the knee.

But they don't always explain how much pain someone experiences.

I've seen many people return to walking, golf, gardening and the activities they love—even though their MRI scan hasn't changed.
That's because successful rehabilitation is about much more than changing what's on a scan.

It's about understanding your knee, becoming stronger, rebuilding confidence and knowing how to manage flare-ups.

That's one of the reasons I've started my weekly YouTube series and Knowledge Centre—to help people understand their knees and feel more confident about managing them.

This week's video explains why pain isn't always a direct measure of damage and why that's actually very good news.

Does knee pain always mean you're damaging your knee?

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear in clinic is:
"If it hurts, I must be making it worse."

It sounds logical...

But modern pain science tells us the answer isn't always that simple.

People can have significant arthritis on an X-ray and experience very little pain.

Others can have relatively minor changes but struggle with everyday activities.

That's because pain is influenced by much more than what's happening inside the joint.

Understanding this can completely change the way you think about your knee—and often gives people the confidence to start moving again.

That's exactly what I explore in this week's video:

🎥 Why Does My Knee Hurt? Understanding Knee Pain

If you've ever been told you have "wear and tear" or wondered why your MRI doesn't seem to match how your knee feels, I think you'll find it reassuring.

🎉 I'm excited to finally share something I've been working on...

For a long time I've wanted to create a place where people could find trustworthy, evidence-based information about knee pain without having to spend hours searching the internet and wondering what's true.

Today, I'm really excited to say it's finally here.

🎥 I've launched a brand new YouTube channel dedicated entirely to knee health.

Every week I'll be releasing a new video covering a different topic to help you better understand your knees, reduce the confusion surrounding knee pain and give you practical, evidence-based advice that you can actually use.

Alongside the YouTube channel, I've also launched a brand new Knowledge Centre on my website.

Every week you'll be able to find:
✅ A new YouTube video
✅ A detailed companion article if you prefer reading
✅ A growing library of knee health information, all in one place

I've also started a Weekly Knee Health Email, so if you'd like each week's video, article and practical tips delivered straight to your inbox, you can sign up in just a few seconds.

These free resources sit alongside The Complete Knee Physiotherapy Plan, my online rehabilitation programme designed to help people with persistent knee pain follow a structured plan to become stronger, move more confidently and get back to the activities they enjoy.

This week's topic is:
Why Does My Knee Hurt? Understanding Knee Pain

It's one of the biggest questions I hear in clinic, and the answer is often very different from what people expect.

🏌️ "I'm worried my golfing days are numbered."

It's something I hear surprisingly often from golfers who develop knee pain.

Sometimes they've been told they have arthritis.

Sometimes they've had an MRI showing "wear and tear."

Sometimes they're simply finding that walking the course, tackling slopes, or playing multiple rounds is becoming more difficult.

The problem is that many golfers assume knee pain automatically means they need to stop playing.

In reality, that's often far from the truth.

Over the years, I've worked with many golfers who have continued enjoying the game they love despite arthritis, previous injuries, surgery, and ongoing knee problems.

That's one of the reasons I've created my latest free guide:

🏌️ **Keeping Golfers on the Course Despite Knee Pain**

Inside, I cover:

✅ The 7 most common mistakes golfers make when managing knee pain

✅ Why stopping activity completely is rarely the answer

✅ Practical physiotherapy strategies to help you stay active

✅ Simple exercises to improve strength, balance and confidence

✅ How to manage flare-ups more effectively
