A racing heart before a meeting that isn't actually dangerous. A jaw that won't unclench on a quiet Sunday. A body that stays braced long after there's anything left to brace for.

That's not a fault in the system. It's the nervous system doing exactly what it's built to do – just not always at the right moment.

Learning to recognise when it's switched on, and how to help it switch off again, is often more useful than trying to think your way out of it.

There's a version of the world that gets written early: people are scary, judgement is coming, safest to stay on your own.

It's not a conclusion anyone reaches all at once. It gets built, piece by piece, usually for good reason at the time.

The problem is that scripts like that tend to run in absolutes — all people, always, everywhere. Most of the work isn't tearing the script up. It's finding the exceptions: some people are kind. Some situations are safe. Some risks are worth it.

That's usually where things start to shift.

Some decisions get made so automatically they stop looking like decisions. The route you take. The plans you don't make. The invitations that get a polite no before you've even thought about it properly.

Underneath a lot of that is a quiet, longstanding belief: better safe. Better careful. Better to avoid it.

That belief possibly made sense once. It doesn't mean it still has to run things.

Not every difficult experience looks dramatic from the outside. Sometimes it's something brief – a few hours, an afternoon – that barely registers as a story worth telling.

But the body doesn't measure impact by how a story sounds. It measures it by how unsafe something felt at the time, especially if that time was a long time ago.

That's why an experience that seems ordinary to describe can still carry real weight.

It's worth taking seriously, whatever size it looks like from the outside.

Six months. A year. Longer than you think it should have taken.

There's a particular kind of pressure that comes from measuring healing against the clock – as if minds worked to a schedule the way trains do.

They don't, really. Change tends to arrive when it's ready, not when it's due.

That's not the same as saying nothing is happening. It usually means something is building, quietly, before it becomes visible.

Something goes wrong, and the questions start. What's wrong with me. Why do I always do this. Why can't I just –

Those questions usually go nowhere, because they're not really questions. They're verdicts dressed up as curiosity.

There's a different version: I wonder why I felt like that. I wonder what was going on underneath. Not to excuse anything – just to understand it.

That small shift, from judgement to curiosity, is often where the useful thinking actually begins.

A meeting you've prepared for a dozen times. A conversation that shouldn't be difficult. And still – the reaction that shows up is bigger than either of those things really calls for.

That's not really about what's happening right now. It's usually an older part of you, responding to something that reminds it of a different time.

That part isn't wrong to be there. It's just not always the part best suited to the moment you're actually in.

Getting to know which part is driving is often where things start to loosen.

Therapy can look like something that happens to you. A room, a clock, someone asking questions. It works better the other way round.

What gets talked about, when, and how fast – those are decisions, and they belong to the client, not the therapist. Even the choice to come in the first place is one of the more potent decisions a person can make.

Practising that kind of choice inside a session, in a low-stakes way, tends to make it easier to practise elsewhere.

Everyone carries their own version of a hill - grief, anxiety, a stretch of life that just feels harder than it should. The shape of it is different for everyone.

There's a common idea that getting through it means one climb. Effort, struggle, summit, done.

It rarely works like that. The terrain changes. The weather changes. A stretch that felt manageable a year ago can feel steep again, for reasons that have nothing to do with how far you've actually come.

That's not going backwards. It's just what a real hill looks like, up close.

What tends to change, over time, is how ready you are to read the terrain and find your own way through it.

Time for yourself. Time for the people who matter most. Time for friendships that give you something back.

Most people can answer those in theory. Fewer can answer them by looking at an actual week — the one just gone, not the one they'd like to have.

The gaps are usually where boundaries have quietly gone missing, not through one big decision but through hundreds of small ones.

Noticing where the time has actually gone is often the first useful step.
