📣It’s Learning Disability Week 🧠💙
This week we’re proud to support Learning Disability Week, a national awareness week dedicated to highlighting the real life experiences of people with a learning disability, and what matters most to them, their families and carers. It's an important reminder to listen, understand and include everyone in our communities.

🔹 What is it?
Learning Disability Week takes place annually during the third week of June. It’s a time to raise awareness about the challenges many people with a learning disability still face, as well as to celebrate their achievements and contributions to society.

🔹 Why it matters:
People with a learning disability can experience barriers in health, work, education and daily life, from misunderstanding or stigma to difficulties accessing services and support. Learning Disability Week encourages everyone to challenge these barriers, promote equality and ensure that people are seen, heard and valued.

💬 How you can help:
• Talk about and share information on learning disabilities.
• Celebrate the talents and strengths of people with a learning disability.
• Promote inclusive attitudes and reasonable adjustments in care and community life.

🩺 Check Your Blood Pressure & Know Your Numbers!
High blood pressure is often called a “silent killer” as it usually has no symptoms but can increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney problems, and dementia. The only way to know is to get it checked regularly.

📊 Your blood pressure reading has two numbers, e.g: 130/80 mmHg:
• Systolic (top) – pressure when your heart beats.
• Diastolic (bottom) – pressure when your heart relaxes.

🏡 Ways to check your BP?
• At home – use a digital monitor and share readings with your GP.
• At a pharmacy – many offer free checks for adults 40+. Find one here: https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/pharmacies/
• At your GP surgery.

📅 How often:
• Adults 40+ with no known issues: at least every 5 years.
• If at risk or already high: more frequent checks as advised.

✅ Why it matters: Detecting high blood pressure early lets you make lifestyle changes or get treatment to protect your heart and health.

💙It’s Diabetes Awareness Week 💙
This week is about raising awareness of diabetes and shining a light on what it’s really like to live with it, day in and day out.

💡 What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition where the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood is too high. This happens when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t use it properly.

There are different types, including:
• Type 1 diabetes.
• Type 2 diabetes.
• Gestational diabetes (during pregnancy).
Living with diabetes means constantly balancing food, activity and, for some people, medication or insulin, something that can be challenging both physically and emotionally.

At our surgery, we’re here to support you with:
✔️ Regular reviews and check-ups.
✔️ Monitoring and managing your condition.
✔️ Lifestyle advice and support.
✔️ Access to specialist services if needed.

If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, or are worried about your risk, it’s important to speak to us.
Small steps and the right support can make a big difference 💙

🚴‍♀️ It’s Bike Week! 🚴‍♀️
This week is all about celebrating cycling and encouraging people to swap short car journeys for two wheels 🚲

Led by Cycling UK, Bike Week aims to show that cycling can be an easy, everyday way to get around, whether that’s commuting, shopping or getting some fresh air.

💚 Why cycle?
Cycling is a simple way to improve your health and wellbeing:
✔️ Boosts fitness and heart health.
✔️ Supports mental wellbeing.
✔️ Helps reduce the risk of long-term conditions.
✔️ Improves air quality and reduces pollution.

NHS organisations across the country promote cycling as part of “active travel”, helping people build movement into their daily routines and stay healthier for longer.
Even small changes can make a big difference, like cycling instead of driving for short journeys.

🚲 This Bike Week, why not:
✨ Try a short cycle instead of driving?
✨ Explore your local area on two wheels?
✨ Build cycling into your daily routine?

Let’s get moving for our health, our community and our environment 💚

💙 It’s Carers Week 💙
This week we’re recognising and celebrating the incredible contribution of unpaid carers in our community. Carers Week is all about raising awareness of caring, highlighting the challenges carers face, and recognising the vital role they play in supporting family members, friends and neighbours.

Being a carer can be rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding.
That’s why it’s so important carers get the support they need too 💙

👉 Did you know?
If you are a carer, letting us know at the practice means we can support you better.
By joining our carer register, you may be able to access:
✔️ Priority vaccinations (such as flu and COVID-19).
✔️ Flexible appointments to fit around your caring role.

It also helps us understand the pressures you may be under, so we can support your physical and mental wellbeing and help reduce stress.

You don’t have to do it alone 💙
If you are a carer, or think you might be, please visit our website to complete the carers form, or get in touch with our team to let us know.

💙It’s Men’s Health Week 💙
This week, led by the Men’s Health Forum, is all about raising awareness of preventable health issues and encouraging men and boys to take action and seek advice when they need it.
Too often, men put off getting help, but early support can make a big difference.

💡 We encourages men to:
✔️ Check in on their physical and mental health.
✔️ Talk about mental wellbeing.
✔️ Seek help early for any concerns.
We are always here to support you.

Alongside our nurses & GP’s, we also have two Mental Health Practitioners available to our patients for appointments both face-to-face & via telephone.

You can also self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies without needing to see a GP.

Looking after your health isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a step towards staying well for yourself and those around you 💙
If you need support, please get in touch with our team.

👶 Newborn Care: Getting the Best Start in Life!
Having a newborn is exciting, joyful and sometimes overwhelming. Your baby grows and changes quickly in those early weeks and months, the NHS Best Start in Life hub has trusted, practical advice for every step of the journey. 👇

💡 What to Expect and How to Help Your Baby Thrive?
Feeding and bonding: Whether breastfeeding, bottle feeding or a mix of both, feeding is more than nutrition. It helps you bond and respond to your baby’s needs. There is helpful support for all feeding journeys.
Safe sleep and routines: Newborn sleep can be irregular. The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a cot in the same room as you for the first six months. Advice on sleep patterns and coping with tiredness can help you adjust.

Caring for your baby: From changing nappies to bathing, dressing and knowing when your baby needs a check up or vaccination, there is clear guidance on essential newborn care.
Understanding your baby: Babies communicate through behaviour. Recognising when they are ready to feed, play, rest or be comforted helps you respond with confidence.

🧠 Where to find trusted support?
Explore more guidance and tips for newborn care, development and family support on the NHS Best Start in Life hub.
You and your baby deserve support that helps you feel confident and informed every day. 💙

🦴 Look After Your Bones!
Strong bones are essential for mobility, balance, and overall health. Bone health becomes especially important as we age to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

💡 Tips to keep your bones healthy:
• Eat a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D. Good sources include dairy, leafy greens, oily fish, and fortified foods.
• Stay active with weight-bearing exercises such as walking, dancing, jogging, or strength training.
• Avoid smoking and limit alcohol, which can weaken bones.
• Get sunlight safely to help your body make vitamin D.

📌 When to get advice:
• Speak to your GP or nurse if you have a family history of osteoporosis, have broken bones easily, or are concerned about your bone health.
• They can offer screening, guidance, and support to keep your bones strong.
