Men's Mental Health Week: The Conversation We Still Need to Have
Despite so much progress being made in talking about mental health, many men still feel pressure to "get on with it", stay strong, and keep their struggles hidden.
During Men's Mental Health Week, it's worth asking ourselves an important question: Have we created environments where men genuinely feel safe to talk? Confidentially and without judgement.
Men have grown up receiving messages that vulnerability is a form of weakness. As a result, this has led you to become experts at masking stress, anxiety, overwhelm, burnout, grief, and or just going through a really difficult time. You continue showing up to work, support your families, and meeting expectations while quietly struggling beneath the surface.
The challenge is that mental health difficulties don't simply disappear when ignored. Instead, they can show up as irritability, withdrawal, poor sleep, reduced concentration, increased sickness absence, relationship difficulties, or physical health problems. For you - this might mean you end up at the GP's.
For employers, this matters. Mental wellbeing isn't just a personal issue. It directly impacts engagement, productivity, performance, retention, and workplace culture.
Creating mentally healthy workplaces doesn't require grand gestures. Often, it starts with simple actions:
• Encouraging open conversations about wellbeing
• Training managers to recognise signs of distress
• Providing practical coping strategies
• Normalising help-seeking behaviour
• Creating psychologically safe environments
As a Wellbeing and Resilience Life Coach, I often see the difference that one supportive conversation can make. When people feel heard, instead of being judged, barriers begin to fall.
This Men's Mental Health Week, let's move beyond awareness and focus on action. Because strength isn't about suffering in silence. It's about knowing when to reach out and recognising that nobody should have to face life's challenges alone.
I assist business with workshops for managers to help spot the signs of mental health, and feel confident to have the conversations.
