Members of the REACH team recently took part in Pint of Science UK, a public engagement event in Newcastle that brings research into relaxed, everyday spaces.

Dr Jennifer Deane, Dr Liz Pharoah, Dr Pearlin Teow and PhD student Emily Haworth hosted a session titled “The C word”, exploring the importance of the cancer patient’s voice in shaping research.

The team shared examples of their qualitative research and Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement activities, as well as creative approaches they have used to communicate findings and create real-world impact.

This included the RURALLY animation, developed by Dr Christina Dobson, which encourages people living in rural communities to contact primary care if they notice possible symptoms of colorectal cancer.

They also discussed the Communicating Cancer project, where Dr Jennifer Deane developed a forum theatre production to help build health literacy skills for people from underserved communities who may be experiencing symptoms of head and neck cancer.

A brilliant example of research, creativity and public engagement coming together to support earlier cancer diagnosis and improve health communication.

🏆 Ryan Lab success at London Calling 2026!

A huge congratulations to Eleanor Woodward and Steven Knox from the Ryan Lab group, whose innovative Nanopore sequencing research was recognised at this year’s London Calling conference, organised by Oxford Nanopore Technologies.

Eleanor presented her CRUK-funded work on nanopore-only telomere-to-telomere assembly of isochromosome 17q in childhood medulloblastoma in the Early Career Researcher Spotlight session. After winning the public vote for best Spotlight talk, she was invited to present her work on the main stage.

Steven was also recognised for his poster on telomere-to-telomere assembly of a rare constitutional dicentric chromosome, receiving a Highly Commended Poster award. This work was funded by CCLG, The Little Princess Trust and MRC.

A fantastic achievement for both, showcasing the Ryan Lab’s work in using nanopore sequencing to better understand complex chromosome structures.

👏 Congratulations Eleanor and Steven!

Congratulations to Dr Rebecca Hill, Dr Melanie Beckett, Dr Louisa Taylor, Dr Saimir Luli and Prof Steve Clifford, who have been awarded a ÂŁ310,000 The Little Princess Trust Project Grant to develop advanced medulloblastoma models of radiotherapy.

Working with national and international collaborators, the team will explore how new MYC-targeting therapies could be combined with radiotherapy, helping generate vital pre-clinical evidence for future childhood brain tumour treatments.

Huge congratulations to Dr Luke Gaughan, who has received a ÂŁ212,089 funding award from
Worldwide Cancer Research to investigate new ways to make radiotherapy more effective for prostate cancer patients.

The project will explore whether targeting DNA repair pathways could help sensitise prostate cancer cells to radiotherapy, and identify promising new treatment combinations for patients in the future.

An incredible achievement and an exciting step forward for prostate cancer research here at Newcastle University.

🔬 We were delighted to host Professor Jonathan Higgins (Newcastle University), who delivered an insightful seminar on:

“Dicentric Chromosomes, Genome Instability, and Cancer.”

The session highlighted how chromosomal rearrangements contribute to genome instability and cancer development, alongside fascinating emerging research into mechanisms linked to chromothripsis and childhood leukaemia.

A big thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion. Events like these continue to strengthen collaboration and innovation across our research community.

Looking forward to the next one in March!
