Members of the REACH team recently took part in Pint of Science UK, a public engagement event in Newcastle that brings research into relaxed, everyday spaces.
Dr Jennifer Deane, Dr Liz Pharoah, Dr Pearlin Teow and PhD student Emily Haworth hosted a session titled “The C word”, exploring the importance of the cancer patient’s voice in shaping research.
The team shared examples of their qualitative research and Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement activities, as well as creative approaches they have used to communicate findings and create real-world impact.
This included the RURALLY animation, developed by Dr Christina Dobson, which encourages people living in rural communities to contact primary care if they notice possible symptoms of colorectal cancer.
They also discussed the Communicating Cancer project, where Dr Jennifer Deane developed a forum theatre production to help build health literacy skills for people from underserved communities who may be experiencing symptoms of head and neck cancer.
A brilliant example of research, creativity and public engagement coming together to support earlier cancer diagnosis and improve health communication.
