As we get older, weโ€™re likely to notice some changes in our mental abilities. For most of us, itโ€™s nothing to worry about.

But dementia is different. Itโ€™s not a normal part of getting older.

The first signs of dementia are often small to start with, but get noticeably worse over a matter of months, as opposed to more gradual changes over many years.

Symptoms may start to affect your daily life, making it more difficult to manage everyday tasks and activities by yourself.

Dementia looks different for everyone, but weโ€™ve put together some common ways these symptoms might appear.

By knowing the signs, we can make sure that we donโ€™t brush off or ignore some of the lesser-known symptoms, to help everyone with dementia get a crucial early diagnosis.

If you recognise any of these signs in yourself or someone else, it could be a good idea to check in with your GP. It doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that you have dementia โ€“ just that something might be wrong.

And if youโ€™d like more information or advice, visit our website or give our Dementia Support Line a call on 0333 150 3456.

Dementia affects every person differently and at Chase Park, we think that's exactly how it should be approached.

Our specialist dementia team works hard to make sure each resident is seen as an individual, not a diagnosis. That means a high support-to-resident ratio, personalised care, and a real focus on helping people hold on to their sense of self through activities, therapies, and the everyday moments that matter.

If you're looking for specialist dementia care for someone close to you and would like to find out more, we're always happy to talk ๐Ÿ’™

We love hearing from the families of our residents ๐Ÿ’™

"So happy that my mam is settled in Chase Park. Staff are amazing, attentive to her needs - nothing is a bother to them. Mam has been more engaged with activities than she has ever been, which gives us as a family confidence she is being well looked after. Many thanks to all the staff that are involved with her care."
Lorraine B, daughter of a Chase Park resident

Moments like this are why we do what we do. Thank you, Lorraine, for taking the time to share this - it means the world to our team.

Many people still think that dementia is just a natural part of ageing, that itโ€™s only forgetting things, and that itโ€™s something that only happens to old people.

But none of that is true.

Dementia is a medical condition caused by different diseases that damage the brain, including Alzheimerโ€™s disease, vascular disease and Lewy body disease.

It has a wide range of symptoms including memory loss, confusion, needing help with daily tasks, problems with language, and changes in behaviour.

These symptoms are progressive, which means they may be relatively mild to begin with, but they get worse over time. Occasional forgetfulness, like misplacing your keys or getting the time wrong for an appointment, is different from dementia.

Dementia affects around a million people in the UK. Over 70,000 people living with dementia are under 65 โ€“ this is called young onset dementia.

And importantly, dementia is different for everyone. No two individuals' experience of dementia will be the same. Different types of dementia also tend to affect people differently, especially in the early stages.
