Long before stadiums filled with fans chanting his name, Cristiano Ronaldo was a young boy in Lisbon chasing a dream that still felt far away. His days at Sporting CP demanded discipline, long hours of training, and sacrifices that few people watching his career today would ever see.

Ronaldo has recalled how he and other young players would visit a McDonald’s near the stadium late at night and ask whether any hamburgers were left. Workers there would give the hungry boys food. Ronaldo later remembered a woman named Edna among the employees who showed them kindness during those early years.

Years passed, and the hungry young footballer became one of the most celebrated players in the sport. Trophies, records, wealth, and worldwide fame followed, but one memory remained with him: people who had little reason to help him had chosen to feed him when he needed it.

During a 2019 interview, Ronaldo spoke about those nights and said he wanted to find the women who had helped him so he could thank them. Edna was later identified after his story gained attention. Fame had changed almost everything around him, but it had not erased his gratitude for a simple meal given years earlier.

Kindness does not need to be grand to matter. A meal, a helping hand, or a little generosity can become part of someone’s story long after we have forgotten giving it. We may never know how far one good deed will travel, but that is a beautiful reason to keep giving. ❤️🙏

One of the cruellest things trauma teaches you is how to drown without making a sound.

You learn to smile before anyone asks what’s wrong. You learn to say, “I’m fine,” before you’ve even checked whether it’s true. You become so practised at swallowing your feelings that eventually nobody thinks to look for them anymore.

People admire how calm you are.

How capable you are.

How resilient you are.

They have no idea that none of those things came naturally. They were survival skills. They were the cost of growing up believing there wasn’t room for your pain.

So you become the person everyone leans on while secretly wondering who you would lean on if you finally fell apart.

You sit in rooms full of people feeling completely alone because they know your personality, your job, your sense of humour, your reliability…

…but they don’t know the version of you who cries in the shower so nobody hears.

They don’t know the version of you who lies awake replaying conversations, wondering if you’ve upset someone.

They don’t know the exhaustion of constantly monitoring yourself, reading every room, anticipating every mood, making yourself easy to love because somewhere along the way you learned that your real feelings were too much.

And then one day someone says,

“I had no idea you were struggling.”

As though your silence meant there was nothing to hear.

But silence isn’t the absence of pain.

Sometimes it’s what pain sounds like after nobody listened for long enough.

The hardest part isn’t that people didn’t save you.

It’s wondering whether they would have noticed if you hadn’t kept saving yourself.

Sometimes the behaviour we see is the tip of the iceberg.

When a child cannot walk through the school gates, our instinct is often to focus on attendance. But lasting change rarely comes from pushing harder. It comes from understanding deeper.

School avoidance is often a child’s way of telling us that something feels too overwhelming, too frightening, or too difficult to cope with.

When we shift our question from “How do we get them into school?” to “What is making school feel impossible?”, we move from managing behaviour to understanding need.

Understanding always comes before meaningful support.

If this resonated with you, please consider sharing it. It may help another family feel seen today.

A reminder that all emotions have purpose 🩵 so useful for children to learn this instead of thinking there are “negative emotions” they should not feel.
