Flavours of 500 Years 🍽️

We're very pleased to share with you our latest project – an RGS Cookbook: Flavours of 500 Years.👇
https://www.rgs.newcastle.sch.uk/500th/rgs-500-cookbook

Inspired by an earlier RGS cookbook produced for charity in 1989, this project has been a collaboration between Junior HistSoc and RGS Diversity Soc, to produce a cookbook of recipes donated by people from across the RGS community.

This digital book features some delicious recipes with flavours from across the globe, alongside some history of food at RGS and food history facts!

We hope you enjoy cooking. Thank you so much to everyone who shared their recipes with us. And a huge thank you to the students and staff who have put a lot of hard work into producing it.💫

After receiving 6 x 9s, 3 x 8s & 1 x 7 grade GCSEs, Hyder R (North Sheilds) is looking forward to studying History, Politics and French at RGS Sixth Form as he works towards his ambition of pursuing a career in international relations.

Reflecting on his time at RGS, Hyder credits his teachers, particularly Mr Bellew, for helping to develop both his confidence and curiosity. "Mr Bellew, Teacher of Physics, has been brilliant. His lessons are really engaging and made me realise just how much I enjoy the subject," he explains.

Congratulations to all of our Year 11 students.✨

At a time when there is considerable discussion about the educational and economic North-South divide, the achievements of this year's cohort demonstrate that geography should be no barrier to academic excellence!

From flying with the RAF to playing cricket internationally, Fraser H’s RGS journey has been defined by seizing opportunities.🚀

Today, Fraser (Whitley Bay) is celebrating achieving 10 x 9 & 1 x 8 grade GCSEs and looking forward to joining RGS Sixth Form.

Studying GCSEs in French, Computer Science, Design Engineering and Economics, Fraser's passion for engineering and technology recently earned him the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.

Beyond the classroom, Fraser has immersed himself in school life through the RAF regiment of the Combined Cadet Forces (CCF), cricket and tennis, with highlights including flying experiences, international sports tours to Dubai and Sri Lanka, and the opportunity to play cricket in an international stadium.

Reflecting on his journey, Fraser is particularly grateful for the support of his family and teachers, especially Mr Lowe, whose encouragement helped him develop his passion for engineering.

Well done, Fraser. We wish you all the best as you explore future pathways in engineering and medicine!🔬⚙️

“I’ve really enjoyed being here. Everyone is so welcoming, and there’s always support if you need it.”❤️

Having joined RGS in Year 7, Abena O (Newcastle) is celebrating receiving 11 x 9 grade GCSEs and looking ahead to the next stage of her journey in RGS Sixth Form.

Initially describing herself as quite shy, Abena has grown in confidence through a wide range of experiences, from founding the RGS Knitting Club and taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award to exploring Iceland on one of her favourite school trips.

Studying German, French, Art and Geography alongside her core GCSE subjects, Abena credits her success to encouragement from both her teachers and peers, particularly through subject clinics and support from the Maths Department.

As she prepares for RGS Sixth Form, Abena is looking forward to continuing the subjects she enjoys while keeping her future options open.

Congratulations, Abena!👏

A huge congratulations to our record-breaking GCSE students.🎉

This year’s Year 11 students have achieved remarkable results, with:

✨94.8%1 grades 6-9 (equivalent to B-A*)
✨85.4% grades 7-9 (equivalent to A-A*)
✨68.8% grades 8-9 (equivalent to A*), and
✨43% at the highest possible grade 9.

Geoffrey Stanford, Head of RGS Newcastle, said: “At RGS Newcastle we are proud to be educating young people in the North East who have the ambition and ability to achieve at the highest levels.

"We are working hard to ensure that opportunity is available to students from a wide range of backgrounds through our bursary provision and partnership programme.

“The record-breaking results are therefore more than an outstanding set of GCSE grades. They are a celebration of the ability, ambition, resilience and determination of young people in the North East, and a powerful demonstration that talent and academic potential are found everywhere.”
