UK Supreme Court judgment on deprivation of liberty

The UK Supreme Court has recently handed down a judgment changing the definition of deprivation of liberty.

The Department of Health and Social Care has published guidance on GOV.UK, setting out the main points from the judgment and what providers, local authorities, health and social care staff, and others involved in care arrangements should consider.

TSA is sharing this information for awareness. Any enquiries about the judgment, its implications, or individual care arrangements should be directed to the DHSC guidance in the first instance. Where specific advice is needed, organisations should follow their own local legal, safeguarding and Mental Capacity Act processes.

The DHSC guidance is available here:

🚀 You Asked, We Listened: Transforming Models of Care

📅 Thursday 16 July
📍 Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher, KT10 9AJ
⏰ 09:00 – 15:30

You told us the biggest challenge is not understanding where care is heading, but making change happen in practice.

Across health, housing and social care, organisations are being asked to deliver more preventative, joined-up and outcomes-focused services while managing rising demand and limited capacity.

That is why we have shaped Transforming Models of Care around the issues you said matter most.

What to expect:
✅ Practical insight into the shift from reactive to proactive care
✅ Honest lessons from organisations already implementing change
✅ Panel discussions with system leaders and practitioners
✅ Peer discussions to explore barriers and identify realistic next steps
✅ Networking, Q&A sessions and opportunities to shape future TSA events

This is an interactive opportunity to challenge thinking, share practical learning and connect with others working through the same pressures and priorities.

If you work across health, housing or social care and are involved in shaping, leading or delivering services, this is a conversation you will want to be part of.

Alyson Scurfield OBE: recognition for our CEO, TSA and the wider TEC sector

Today we are sharing the full story behind the news that Alyson Scurfield, CEO of TSA, has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List for services to Technology Enabled Care.

This is a hugely proud moment for Alyson, and for everyone at TSA.

It is also an important moment of recognition for the wider TEC sector. Alyson has always been clear that this honour belongs to the sector as much as it does to her personally, reflecting the work of TSA’s members, partners, staff team and the many organisations across the UK helping people live safely, independently and well in the place they call home.

The article looks at Alyson’s leadership across TSA and the wider sector, including her work on quality and safety, the digital phone switchover, the Quality Standards Framework, the Virtual Home, TEC commissioning, and the growing role of technology enabled care in national health, housing and care reform.

It also reflects on the personal experience that has shaped Alyson’s commitment to TEC, including caring for her dad, who was able to live at home with the support of family, carers and the right technology around him.

Alyson said:
“This honour is recognition of the brilliant TSA team who have supported me so much, and crucially, it’s acknowledgement of our talented, highly innovative TEC sector. Their dedication to improving people’s lives never ceases to amaze me.”

We’re proud to be supporting Carers Week

This year’s theme, Building Carer Friendly Communities, highlights the importance of creating environments where unpaid carers feel recognised, supported, and empowered. Carer-friendly communities can make a meaningful and lasting difference to the lives of carers and the people they support.

At TSA, we are committed to connecting communities and enriching lives. A key part of that commitment is supporting carers through workforce development initiatives, including innovative learning tools such as the Virtual Home, and by showcasing what good looks like across our community through the development and implementation of Technology Enabled Care (TEC) solutions.

Learn more about the virtual home - https://www.tsa-voice.org.uk/tsa-training-service/the-virtual-home/

Throughout Carers Week, we’ll be sharing stories and case studies from our members that demonstrate the positive impact TEC can have on people who draw on care and support, as well as their families and carers. These examples highlight how technology can help people live more independently while providing greater reassurance, confidence, and support for those who care for them.

Join us this week as we celebrate carers and explore how we can work together to build more carer-friendly communities.
