That stiff back that catches you on certain movements? It might be coming from a disc, and that is not the bad news it sounds like.
Discs naturally lose a bit of height and water content over the years.
When one takes more load than it should, particular positions flare it up, bending, twisting, sitting too long.
Degenerative disc changes show up on a lot of scans in people who feel completely fine, so a finding on its own is not a verdict.
What matters is how your spine is moving and loading day to day.
That is what we assess, and it is what IDD Therapy and targeted rehab are built to address.
If your back has a pattern to when it complains, it is worth understanding why.
What movement tends to set yours off?

If you spend the day at a desk, you know the spot.
It sits across the top of the shoulders and creeps up to the base of the skull by mid-afternoon.
Chin-forward sitting keeps the muscles at the back of the neck working the whole time you're focused on a screen.
They don't get a break, so they tighten, and the ache settles in.
Most people we see for neck and shoulder pain do the same job you do.
We treat this with manual therapy, dry needling, and stretching and strengthening you can actually keep up between sessions.
The aim is to take the load off those muscles and change what your neck does at the desk.
Recognise this one? Tell us where your desk day settles.

Plantar fasciitis is often the first sharp step out of bed in the morning.
That pain sits where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel, and it flares when the tissue is carrying more load than it can handle.
Generic advice tends to stop at "stretch your calf and rest it." Sometimes that helps.
Often it doesn't, because the fascia needs loading in the right way, not just stretching.
Our approach for the foot combines targeted stretching, a strengthening prescription built around how you actually move, and hands-on manual therapy to settle the irritated tissue.
Runners in Newmarket see us for this a lot, especially when mileage has crept up.
If morning heel pain has been hanging around, it's worth getting it looked at properly.
Had morning heel pain that just won't shift? Tell us how long it's been going on.

Most sore shoulders come from a rough night's sleep or an awkward reach, and they settle within a week or two.
The ones worth paying attention to behave differently.
They catch when you lift the arm, the shoulder feels weaker than the other side, and the ache wakes you when you roll onto it at night.
That pattern usually points to something in the tendon or the joint rather than a passing strain.
If yours has been dragging on past a fortnight, or it's started interrupting your sleep, that's the point to get it looked at rather than working around it.
We assess shoulders here in Newmarket and can tell you fairly quickly which camp yours falls into.
Does yours settle, or does it keep catching?

Most runners can tell you their pace, their mileage, their splits from last week.
Ask them what they did in the twenty four hours after their long run and it goes quiet.
That gap is where a lot of injuries start.
Tissue doesn't get stronger while you train.
It gets stronger after, when you sleep, refuel and let the load settle.
Rush back into the next session and there's no time for that to happen.
We see it a lot with endurance runners around Newmarket, especially in the build up to a race.
Recovery programming, sports massage and a proper stretching and strengthening plan give the body the space it's asking for.
How do you actually recover after a hard session? Tell us below.

"I must have slept funny." We hear it most weeks.
It's the go-to explanation when the back tightens up again, and it lets the real reason off the hook.
A one-off ache from an odd night is one thing.
Back pain that keeps coming back is a pattern, not an accident.
Often it traces to how the spine is loaded through the day, an old strain that never fully settled, or a disc that's carrying more than its share.
The fix starts with knowing which one you're dealing with.
That's the part the throwaway line skips over.
If your back has flared more than once, it's worth getting to the cause rather than waiting for the next round.
Had the "slept funny" excuse more than once? That's usually your sign.

Sciatica gets blamed for a lot of leg pain that isn't actually sciatica.
The difference is where the symptoms go.
True sciatic pain follows the nerve, so it travels below the knee, often with tingling or a bit of weakness in the leg or foot.
A sore lower back that stays put is usually something else.
Sitting tends to make it worse, which is why desk days can feel rough.
If a couple of these apply to you, it's worth getting properly assessed rather than waiting it out.
For nerve-related pain we use IDD Therapy to take pressure off the affected disc, alongside manual therapy and a rehab plan to keep it settled.
Which of these have you felt?

Read this, then check your own posture.
Chin out toward the screen, shoulders creeping forward, upper back rounded.
Most people sit like this all day and never think about it.
The head weighs around five kilos.
The further forward it drifts, the harder the muscles at the base of your neck work to hold it there.
Hours of that, day after day, is where a lot of desk-driven neck and shoulder pain starts.
It builds so gradually you don't notice until the ache is already there.
A few small changes to how you sit, plus manual therapy and some targeted strengthening, can take that load off.
If your neck tightens up by the afternoon, it's worth looking at before it settles in.
