Last week, some of our Lighthouse Clinic team visited Cowes Harbour Commission at the Harbour Office, Town Quay, to provide skin checks for members of staff.

Taking skin checks directly into the workplace gives people the opportunity to have their skin checked in a familiar environment, while also encouraging people to be more aware of their own skin and any changes they may notice.

Early awareness can make a real difference, which is why we’re proud to support local businesses and organisations with accessible skin health checks across the Isle of Wight.

💙 Taking skin health into the Freshwater community.

Last week, our team visited Freshwater Memorial Hall to provide skin cancer checks for members of the local community, in partnership with Freshwater Parish Council.

It was a great opportunity to meet local residents, talk about the importance of being aware of changes to your skin and provide accessible preventative healthcare closer to home.

A big thank you to Freshwater Parish Council for helping us make the clinic possible, and to everyone who came along and took the time to prioritise their skin health.

While in Freshwater, we also stopped at Flow for lunch and enjoyed a great coffee!

We’re proud to continue bringing our services into communities across the Isle of Wight✨

Meet Amanda, one of our Nurse Practitioners at The Lighthouse Clinic 💙

Amanda began her nursing career in 1995 and brings extensive experience in cancer and palliative care. Her career has also taken her internationally with Médecins Sans Frontières in Zambia, supporting patients with HIV/AIDS, as well as to St Thomas’s Hospital in London, where she gained valuable experience in emergency and tropical medicine.

Since joining The Lighthouse Clinic in 2020, Amanda has been dedicated to caring for and supporting patients diagnosed with skin cancer.

Her experience, expertise and compassionate approach help our patients feel informed, supported and reassured throughout their care.

Free Skin Cancer Checks Delivered at The Broadway Centre, Sandown.
Sandown Town Council was pleased to welcome The Lighthouse Clinic to the Broadway Centre, where local residents were offered free, confidential skin cancer checks as part of a community health initiative.
The drop in sessions were delivered in partnership with The Lighthouse Clinic and supported by the Sandown Beach Lifeguards, who regularly promote sun safety awareness along the seafront. The aim of the event was to encourage early detection of skin changes and to make preventative healthcare more accessible to residents and visitors.
Throughout the day, attendees received professional assessments, advice on monitoring moles and sun exposed areas, and guidance on when to seek further medical support. The initiative was particularly welcomed by those who work outdoors or spend extended time on the beach during the summer months.
Malcolm White, General Manager from The Lighthouse Clinic said “We are delighted with the turnout and want to emphasise just how important community based screening opportunities are.” Sandown Town Council extends its thanks to the clinic team and the lifeguards for their continued commitment to local wellbeing.
The council hopes to host further sessions in the future as part of its ongoing work to support public health, early intervention, and accessible community services.

🚨 Nail technicians: you could be the person who notices something that needs checking.

Nail professionals regularly see their clients' hands, nails and surrounding skin, often before a new set of gel or enhancements is applied or reapplied.

With growing conversations around UV exposure from nail lamps and the importance of checking the skin around the nails, knowing what changes to look out for matters.

Could you recognise something that shouldn't be ignored?

That's where MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) training can help.

The Lighthouse Clinic, through Lighthouse Education, has funded MASCED training licences in partnership with Skcin Charity for Hair, Health and Beauty professionals across the Isle of Wight.

🕐 Just 60 minutes online.

MASCED does not train you to diagnose skin cancer. Instead, it gives you the knowledge and confidence to recognise changes that may need further investigation and, importantly, know when to encourage a client to seek medical advice.

You don't need to be a medical professional to potentially make a difference. You just need to know what you're looking at and what to do next.

☀️ Before summer comes to an end, take a few minutes to check your skin.

After months of spending more time outdoors, it's a good opportunity to become familiar with your skin and look for anything that may have changed.

Most skin changes are harmless, but knowing what's normal for you means you're more likely to notice when something isn't.

In this carousel, we've shared some simple steps to help you carry out a skin check at home and the signs that shouldn't be ignored.

If you've noticed a mole or lesion that has changed in size, shape or colour, or a patch of skin that isn't healing as expected, speak to your GP.

💙 Early detection saves lives, and knowing your skin is one of the simplest things you can do for your long-term health.

💙 What a lovely way to spend a Monday at work!

Amanda and Vicky recently visited THE HUT - COLWELL BAY | The Easy Going Beach Restaurant to provide skin checks for their team, helping make preventative healthcare more accessible during the working day.

We had such a lovely day meeting the team, a fabulous bunch of people who clearly really love where they work! It was a pleasure to chat about skin health, carry out checks and help the team prioritise their wellbeing.

💙 Taking skin health into the community.

Our team recently visited The Broadway Centre in Sandown, where we spent time talking to local residents about skin cancer awareness and the importance of looking after your skin.

As part of the visit, we carried out skin checks for local residents, including members of the lifeguard team who spend much of their time working outdoors.

We’re passionate about making preventative healthcare more accessible across the Isle of Wight. By bringing health education and skin checks into local communities, we can help people understand the importance of their skin health and encourage them to seek medical advice if they notice something that concerns them.
