Sometimes a little extra support can make a big difference.

Bridging the Gap is a Mind in Gwent project working with local organisations across Torfaen to support adults aged 18+ with their mental wellbeing.

If you're already accessing community services but feel you need some additional support, we can offer up to six tailored one-to-one sessions for people experiencing mild to moderate mental health needs.

Support can include:

☀️ Emotional wellbeing support
🧠 Supported self-help, including CBT-based approaches
💬 Understanding emotions and building resilience
🤝 Social prescribing to help reduce isolation
❤️ Support for people experiencing suicidal thoughts
💭 Support alongside psychological interventions

Sessions can take place at our Pontypool office, in community settings, online, over the phone, or at home where appropriate.

We also run monthly outreach sessions around trauma awareness and su***de prevention, helping local communities recognise early warning signs and feel more confident about starting conversations and offering support.

Rest and Recovery ☀️
Last week I had the pleasure of taking the week off to go down to Cornwall and practice some Windsurfing.

Something that comes up time and time again in my practice are discussions surrounding self-care and rest; feeling guilt for not constantly working or ‘being productive’, or struggling to find the time. And time and time again it’s become something I work with clients to explore curiously how important is rest and recovery?

It’s definitely not something I find easy. But one model that I find really helpful comes from Jacobson and colleagues (2001) model of behavioural activation - that each day we should aim to balance a three legged stool of activities within our day. These should consist of routine activities (e.g. basic house work or your nighttime routine), necessary activities (e.g. going to work, sorting paperwork etc), and pleasurable activities (e.g. seeing friends or doing hobbies). Balancing these three types of activities within our day can help us improve our mood and reduce avoidance. Of course training in CBT I’m interested in the thoughts and beliefs also being explored. But if you are unsure how or why to balance engaging in pleasurable activities - the model could be a helpful starting point or structure to draw off. Perhaps start with a list of what activities you may want to include in your day or engage with could be helpful.

At Mind in Gwent, we know that speaking to a doctor about your mental health can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time asking for support.

That’s why we’ve been working in partnership with local young people, medical students at Cardiff University, and our Children, Young People and Families team to create a new resource: Talking to the Doctor about your Mental Health.

The booklet has been co-produced with young people to help make conversations with healthcare professionals feel more manageable. It includes practical guidance, tips on preparing for appointments, and information about what to expect when discussing mental health with a GP or other healthcare professional.

We’re delighted to now make this resource available and hope it gives young people the confidence to take the first step in seeking support.

Hello 👋 still busy studying and working through the CBT training, what I’m now finding really interesting is just how much CBT is becoming involved in my integrative practice and how much easier it is for me to remember, draw on and explain CBT theory!

Here’s a cake I made recently for a dear friend. Usually I find making big celebration cakes for events stressful but this time the process of choosing and arranging edible flowers onto the cake made it a very relaxing and mindful experience which is usually what I encourage other people to do🙈

Also a sneak peak into my life outside therapy to share that self-care can be a little unconventional - recently for me it was snorkelling with puffins 🐧
