Mind in Gwent

Mind in Gwent We want to create a mentally healthy society. Mind in Gwent is member of the Local Mind Associations in England and Wales.

Through our information, services and campaigns, we tackle stigma, barriers and isolation so that everyone can access mental health support when they need it. Mind in Gwent is a mental health organisation formed by the merger of Newport Mind Association, Mind Monmouthshire and Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent Mind. With offices in Newport, Abergavenny, Pontypool, and Brynmawr, we use our shared experienc

e and knowledge to help people in our diverse communities with their mental health struggles. We provide a wide range of support and services working with diverse communities across Gwent to help reach those in our communities in need of support. Our services include Wellbeing and Counselling services for adults, Children and Young People’s services (including group and one on one support in and outside of schools), Housing, Tenancy and Supported Living services, warm hubs and rural working/farmers’ support. Ellie first joined Mind in Gwent as a volunteer in October 2022, hoping to gain experience before starting a psychology degree. What she found was so much more than a stepping stone for her career.

Volunteering gave Ellie confidence, purpose, lifelong friendships and the chance to make a real difference to young people's mental health. Alongside her degree, she continued volunteering and has since progressed through three different staff roles. Today, she works full time across two Mind in Gwent projects, with plans to return to university in 2027 to complete a master's degree.

As Ellie says: "Volunteering turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made."

Volunteering doesn't just change the lives of the people you support. It can change your own life too.

If you've ever thought about volunteering but aren't sure where to start, we're here to help you take the first step. Whether you're looking to build confidence, gain experience, meet new people or make a difference in your community, we'd love to hear from you.

Mind. Mind Cymru. Mind in Gwent. What's the difference?

Mind in Gwent is a local Mind operating independently in Newport, Monmouthshire, Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent. We support communities in our local areas with a wide variety of mental health services, including counselling, wellbeing groups, housing and tenancy support, and services for young people and families.

Mind is a national mental health charity that operates across the UK. For its work in Wales, it's known as Mind Cymru. Its work includes lobbying government for improved access to mental health support, as well as running national helplines and information campaigns that help people manage and take care of their mental health.

While we share elements of our branding with national Mind and other local Minds, we operate as an independent charity. That means we’re responsible for raising our own funds and shaping the services we deliver.

If you live in Gwent and need mental health support, or want to raise funds for a charity focused on supporting mental health and wellbeing in your local community, Mind in Gwent is for you!

What is Local Mind Week?

As one of 97 local Minds operating across the UK, Mind in Gwent is an independent charity. We directly support and are run by local people in Newport, Monmouthshire, Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent.

Local Mind Week gives us (and other local Minds) a chance to highlight some of the important work we deliver in our communities.

Because every mind is different, every local Mind is too. Every local Mind shapes its services around the people who need them. After all, the best people to understand a community are the people living within it.

We’re proud to be part of the local Mind network. You can rely on us to continue providing lifechanging mental health support to the people of Gwent, now and into the future.

You don’t have to wait for something big to happen to feel happier.

Small, everyday actions can impact how we feel. By making space for more positive moments in your day, you give yourself more opportunities to boost your mood and improve your wellbeing.

Choose one of the actions above and make time for it today. It doesn’t have to take long – even a few minutes can make a difference. Notice how you feel before and after.

Over time, you’ll discover which activities lift your mood the most. The more you repeat the ones that work for you, the more positive moments you can create in everyday life.

What daily actions have the biggest impact on your mood? Let us know in the comments 😊
