REST is one of the first things we’re told after an injury.

And sometimes it’s exactly what we need.

But somewhere along the way, rest became confused with doing nothing.

The body doesn’t stop because one part is injured.

Blood continues to flow.
Lungs continue to breathe.

The nervous system continues its endless conversation between body and brain.

Recovery isn’t simply about waiting for tissues to heal.
It’s about learning how to keep that conversation alive.

I’ve written more about this in this week’s Substack

There is plenty of learning, but there is also laughter, encouragement and support. Their collective energy is a reminder that movement has always been about more than exercise.

But evolution didn’t build us that way.

The hips, pelvis and spine evolved together and still depend on one another today.

FAME COSTS

The vibrancy of the 80s, spurred by individualism, threaded itself into culture. But alongside it, something else began to shift. Public spaces for movement quietly declined, and movement itself began to change.

It became something we could buy.

Influenced by the rise of free-market thinking under leaders Maggie and Ronald Reagan, more aspects of life moved into the private sphere — including how we look after our bodies. Without really noticing, we followed that trail.

And movement became a commodity.

Now, it is something we can filter, track, shape and present. Something we can fix, improve, and package until it looks acceptable enough for the public eye.

The demands of daily life continue to soften, while the tools designed to “help” us multiply — apps, programmes, platforms — each one quietly pulling us further away from our own physical experience.
